How Much did you Pay?

Hi everyone.. I'm trying to post a "poll" and have never done it before.. so please forgive me in advance if I screw it up..

I'm just curious to know how much everyone paid for their Catamarans... My husband and I are still working out our budget, and it's good to get a realistic sense of what most people spend...

I am not comfortable discussing what I paid, but I will tell you the multihulls I currently own...

Hi Scarlet, Happy New Year to you and everyone by the way....

I'm not sure what your poll will tell you or how "realistic" it will be to your own personal situation as that is really what its all about... "your personal situation" ie: level of funds, sailing experience, planned cruising areas/destinations, health and mobility, general "how to fix it/things" knowledge, etc etc.

There are people on this forum that represent all permutations of the above variables (and others I am sure I haven't thought of)... in other words multihull ownership with just pennies or millions and in between.

But "Most" are enjoying what their personal "situation" allows I like to think and hope....
It is certainly in general agreement amongst Cruisers that Multihull ownership is more costly typically than Monohull ownership by pure physical size and multihull attributes etc. That is a big negative....

Forgive me if I am stating the obvious or facts that you probably already know...but I don't believe that you must be in for.. say.. $300,000 or better to realisticlly own a multihull , its a much more complex equation than that. jm2cw....

Scarlet, I think the point being made is that going by price alone is, well, rather meaningless. New or used? 30 feet or 50 feet. What systems: outboard engines or inboard diesels. The list is endless.

For examples: Two different boats of the same vintage and size and systems could be twice the cost of another due to condition, condition, condition. Two different boats of the same length by different builders could have substantially different prices - new or used, coastal or offshore?

Here's my weird way of thinking:
Say a marina berth costs $3,000 per year.
An investment that would earn $3,000 @ 6% = $50,000.
So a liveaboard looking at life in a marina has to start by foregoing $50,000 interest earning capital. i.e. give up the opportunity of owning $50,000 in shares or reducing mortgage by $50,000.
Sooo, a $10,000 boat in a marina costs $60,000.

6%; where without financial risk do you find that today? Alternatively, add the cost of managing that risk to the equation and subtract that from annual marina fees to narrow the gap. Most importantly, you can find other ways to invest the $3k but you won't be sailing.

Scarlet, your question as asked is non-sensical and can only provide an even spread representing a very broad distribution spectrum - assuming those that even bother to answer it are representative of the catamaran-owning community.

It is like asking world-wide "how much did you pay for your house?" without specifying size, location, building material, age, usage, appointments, etc. You would get answers ranging from grass huts to palatial mansions, locations from abandoned strip mine fields to Malibu Beach, and all combinations between.

Do you think the answers would be different in a monohull thread?

To get any useful data, you need to narrow your specifications a bit. At least to boat size, age, construction and intended usage. Even then, you would only have a thin guideline because the data would be skewed by prices reflecting bargaining skills, market conditions and fantastic deals or fantastic ripoffs.
