How does the new Outremer steering system work?

The premise of the system is good steering feel when you feel like using the tillers and then use the wheel for more mundane sailing. The tillers I assume are attached to the top of the rudder stocks. Is the wheel system cable or hydraulic? How do the wheels connect/disconnect from the system.

I am not sure this is what Outremer does.
Also I am not sure that the wheel can be disconnected like the outremer.

If you look close some of the drawings from the Jefa page are from the Bieker 53.

You are correct. The system as described in last few drawings is the system we have on our Outremer 51. It works well and allows us to steer using the tillers without having the backlash and friction of the cables and wheel.

RickPalm, are the tillers worth the expense and complication? if you aren't a racer do you use them every day? there aren't any engine controls at the tillers, are there?

I am just thinking how often I hand-steer rather than use the autopilot wind-vane, and how often we are motoring with autopilot on route control. the simple rack & pinion system looks great, but how much protection from weather is available at the two outboard steering pedestals? Does one buy double electronics? How much more complicated is the throttle transmission control with such steering pedestals?

I just had visit to the Outremer factory and toured a new 45. The gentleman from Outremer said that almost every boat takes the tiller option. It's not intended to be any more than a great place to helm when you want to feel like you are back on your Laser.
I bet lots of people use it.

yes, the tiller looks super fun in the Outremer videos!

but I am wondering how often the tiller is realistically used after the first month of ownership by a non-racer. these boats look like a great vessel, and I assume the majority are purchased by owners to cruise, and few are purchased to charter. would the money spent be better spent elsewhere on the boat?

These boats appeal to racers and performance minded sailors. For the same money you could get a much larger condocat, and that would appeal to most.

I had a chance to sail the O51 extensively this summer. The boat has a tiller (you pay circa 10.000 euro for this option) but has cancelled and don't use it anymore. (I didn't tgry it but he says that under spinneaker it's impossible to use it as the spi line is jamming with the tiller. At helm station there is a small lever that engage / disengage the tiller. To me it's a marketing gimmick that is not worth 10.000 euros IMHO..
The boat is a real fun to sail, she is extremely sensitive to trim, very responsive and fast.. A very well equiped boat will cost around 850-900.000 euros (just the rotative carbon mast is 98.000 euros).
To compare, at this price you can buy a Lagoon 52 (a bit stripped version) or Catana 47 carbon or a FP 50 at 700.000 euros.
We hauled out the Outremer for wintering and working on it. Overall, it's avery well made, light and rigid boat. One can see easily that all the effort has been made for better sailing (the best available winches, blocks, stoppers, lines, etc. in the market..) whereas you obviously lack the luxury and space that you get on many other catamarans.

if you are paying for a steering station you might as well as have the controls. could be nice to dock from the extreme position of the tillers. Besides, my first two boats had a tiller with engine controls. :-)

I think anyone looking at a Outremer 50 is looking for sailing performance, which you can expect without a tiller. $1,000 for tiller upgrade is one thing, but 10,000 Euros sounds like a poor value. Thanks for sharing your experience, Yeloya.

I've never sailed an Outremer with tillers but did sit In the outboard chairs and hold the tillers in the boat show. Worth every penny in my opinion.

I spose its up to the buyer to make that decision, strangely most tick that option box.
