Re: How does one hire a captain to sail a newly purchased boat home?

If it is David's tri it was in SFB when I last saw her, she has a monster engine and should easily make 200 days, the construction is excellent but has very low miles.

Dockwise
Sevenstar

Do a google search for 'yacht transport'.

Bringing a ship thru the Panama Canal USA long hard slog. Certainly doable, but if it's just a delivery, it's hard on both the crew and the boat, and can be very expensive. By the time you pay the crew, provision the boat, pay all the taxes, and fix the stuff that breaks the bills start to add up quick.

Figure this trip is a minimum of 4,200nm... Assuming you can do 200miles a day you are looking at 20 days of running time. Realistically figure it will take twice that, so 40 days by the time you stop for fuel, water, food, inspections, transit times ect...

For the yacht transport companies you typically get moved major port to major port, so maybe San Diego to Miami, then a quick delivery back to the Gulf Coast. While you are onbard a lot of the transports have fully functional yards, so it's a good time to get a bottom job, get some interior work repaired, engines serviced, ect...

Re: How does one hire a captain to sail a newly purchased boat home?

When I was looking at a cat in San Diego, I priced Dockwise. It was way too expensive from Esenada, Mexico to RI. The boat will have to be taken to Ensenada. Because of the protectionist Jones act, a foreign flagged vessel may not both pick up and drop off in ports in the USA. It has to come from or be dropped off in a foreign post.
The skipper I know is not interested in that long of a haul.

You will have a lot more fun doing it yourself.
The secret is to leave California and head west.

Re: How does one hire a captain to sail a newly purchased boat home?

I contacted the owner with a quote I received from a big shipping company. Transport from Ensenada, MX to Florida, $57,000. And the boat is in Northern California, near San Francisco, so it has to get down there to be picked up. Jones Act prohibits the shipper from making multiple visits to US ports, so he'll also have to get it from Florida to Mobile. Ouch!

That tri had a major refit and I think it is still not quite done. I'm not sure it has ever been sailed since. Getting it back together and sea trialing it before sailing this route would be a PIA. $$$$ It is interesting though.
It's on the Popyachts site with about 50 pics.
