OK, right on! Now I like you even more!!!
They haven't quite figured out ageing steaks this far down in Mexico. They slice everything really thin. They'll slice it thick for you but it's damned tough usually.
So yeah, I'm getting pretty ready for a real steak.
You may be seeing me early next year. !

Purchase a cheap AC unit at a box store and a small generator. Then use only when the heat is unbearable. Yeah most of the time not necessary. But on the really hot and calm nights, priceless. Also helps the love life, priceless.

Re: How do you do it... (no AC)
not unusual to get up to the 100s here in summer, i swim to cool down mostly but if thats not an option i chuck a couple of squabs on the main cabin floor and soak myself out of a bucket and laze around - its a bit cooler on the floor cos the sea keeps the hull cooler...

Ok you cannot jump in the water to cool yourself off, -im doing this 3x a day, but for you i have an idea I tried and it works well- put 4-5 watermelon in your fridge cool them down and then take your pants off and climb in on top of them- -- it really works!

Re: How do you do it... (no AC)
Firsthand experience with sun roof made of canvas: it works!
I made plain acrylic tents for the foredeck and for the area over the cockpit/companion. Another movable shield is fitted over the boom at midships.
Now I have temp sensors both in and out and experimented with the set up - whichever way you look you can lower the temps inside the boat by a couple of degrees: 3 degrees centigrade EASILY.
The limiting factor is air temp, so you must build the canvas so that air is completely free to move in / out and around the boat. Wind-scoops highly recommended.

Sir,I take exception to your allegation above;the Hudson is Not sewage filled.
These waters are heavily monitored ( google Riverkeeper,Clearwater etc.)
and most all the upscale communities here use the Hudson for drinking water .It is true that we have had a very wet June that has stirred up the sediment but this is not sewage. I was soaking just my feet yesterday, even that was quite refreshing .
So if too hot, jump in ,the waters fine , at 300lbs. you will float.

Acrylic is a wonderful thing and a real improvement over cotton canvas.
It is disappointing to read of, and see boaters use plastic tarps. Another nail in the coffin of the beauty of boats and sailing.

Re: How do you do it... (no AC)
I don't deal well with the heat - never have - doesn't matter if I was at my college fighting weight when I ran at least 18 miles a week or now that I am older and I don't. It is just in my DNA - I turn beet red when I work out or did...and sweat if it is over 85 degrees and I move...yack! doesn't make living without a/c pleasant.
We are going to move North soon so that is how we are going to deal with it...but I have found taking a cool shower or swim to help...cool off my scalp and get my hair wet helps. As well, I found these little fabric neck ties filled with gel stuff that you let soak in water for a few minutes and then tie around your neck. They cool the blood in your carotid arteries and supposedly keep your body temp. down.
I know I have to lose some weight but I can tell you in my personal experience it didn't matter if I was at my perfect weight or not, my body has never been efficient at dealing with heat and I have relatives that have died of dehydration in the field...so I do think some of us are better than others dealing with it...

the sewage is dumped in just south of troy. then again in Bethlehem. another in catskill. thats all i can come up with off the top of my head.
now, what does the hudson do? a tide goes out, a tide comes in. its all hudson water up this far. no salt. so the sewage builds up. its like a washing machine. water moves, and goes nowhere. so for those using it as drinking water, LOL LOL LOL

How about wearing a wet sailor's hat, when you are away from AC? (the cotton hat with brass "port holes" in it for ventilation.) It will keep you head cool, for a while.

Re: How do you do it... (no AC)
It was getting up to 120 degrees in my cabin. I have blue decks and they get so hot in the summer that you'll blister the soles of your feet in no time. Bought some cheap white drop-cloths from a hardware store and tied them onto the lifelines so there was still air movement underneath them. Dropped the temp by about 20 degrees! Looking forward to painting the deck white when i have time.........
Never seem to have problem with heat while at anchor provided that there's at least some breeze. Wind scoops work wonders.

Putting a tarp over the deck with a few feet of space between the tarp and deck will help as well.
