Re: Hot-rodding a Lagoon 440.......

You guys are just in the NHRA super stock class. Moving up to Pro stock class would be replacing the mast with a much taller one, sails latest most expensive material, maybe cuben fiber, remove all the cabinetry that doesn't hold the boat together, cutting the keels off and putting in high aspect ratio deep daggerboards.

Re: Hot-rodding a Lagoon 440.......

Probably the best bang for your buck is going to start with folding props. You should gain 1/2 to 3/4 knot when sailing. You should also gain 1/2 knot of speed when motoring using one engine. I did a calculation a year ago that came out with diesel savings from motoring after 4 years would pay for 1/2 of the folding props cost.

What do you have for down wind sails? Asym, gennekker, do you set them regularly?

Re: Hot-rodding a Lagoon 440.......

I am dissapointed that no one has mention lining the entire interior with synthetic fur (red would work well ) - but I may be showing my age with that suggestion .

Alternatively what about upskilling the crew (or adding to the crew?) so the average speed can be kept up, even when you are not in control......or adding hydrofoils?

Regarding lowering the boom: check with the Lagoon designer first as it may lead to too much sail area and/or instability. We were thinking of changing the rake on Jeanneau Sun Odyssey. Some consciencious rigger suggested we check with the designer first. We got a resounding "NO" from the designer and are happy we didn't go down that road.

Regarding folding/feathering props: look into Kiwi props (the new ones). The weight savings are amazing: metal props are at least 10 times the weight of Kiwi. Props that is.

For a 'cruising cat' ... we find the boat amazing and exhilirating ... quite some statement for a couple who had a Catana 471 (dont you think?)

I would love to hear and perhaps understand the logic and reasoning that made you move from a Catana 471 to a L440

thanks in anticipation

Got our 440 to 19 knots surfing in 35 knots of wind.
Empty water tanks make a difference and when we got rid of a fixed prop on one of the hulls it was like taking the handbrake off the boat.
Leave the boom where it is as most of the wind is up higher anyway.
We now have a 81 m2 mainsail instead of the factory 71m2.
A lot of the time we are reducing sail,it's gos better and smoother too.
Check out the website by sv twixter awesome info on setting sails for all wind angles.

Re: Hot-rodding a Lagoon 440.......

Get some practice on multihull dinghy, ergo a beachcat. You'll soon learn that most folks don't know how to sail big multihulls, because they sail them like monohulls.

Install telltales. Mr Gentry is kind enough to show what they mean:

I started laughing out loud on this post, and continued to laugh throughout the next five or six. Funniest thread I've read in years.

If I ever see a square-top main on a Lagoon, I assure you I'll be looking for the chrome wheels and the foxtail and laughing all the while.

Bash, start looking for those chrome wheels and a foxtail. I think all Lagoons and just about all other boats are going for the square top mains.

Re: Hot-rodding a Lagoon 440.......

Seems like the first things have been mentioned, so -
How about removing some weight/windage aloft, low stretch running rigging and sails, better control lines (sail shaping).
As you go through this, it will aggregate and overall performance will increase.
