Hmmmm buy a Outbound 52 used or a 56ft Crowther Cat for blue water sailing

Some say the mono for big bluewater sail for a smoother ride.
The Outbound 52 do ride smooth and cut through the waves.
The Crowther 56 with 28ft beam has ton of room and a 3ft draft which
is good for the islands.

You should also inquire about the best anchorOr if you should keep a gun onboard

Re: Hmmmm buy a Outbound 52 used or a 56ft Crowther Cat for blue water sailing

We recently did a 800 mile crossing in a rally with 3 cat's and 6 mono's. Had winds over 30 knots for most of the time.

Fact is, NOBODY was comfortable. The mono sailors were constantly wet, we had heaps of noise. Off watch we'd put earplugs in to sleep. The mono guys started running out of dry clothing, bedding was wet etc. One mono sailor had a bruise from his backside to his ankle. My wife broke a fingernail.

Interestingly, NONE of the mono's skipper's wives made the crossing, all preferring to fly in. 2 of the 3 cats were crewed by couples.

2 of the cats arrived at Huon reef a day before the mono's and the other cat. So for that night we were MUCH more comfortable.

Have to keep an eye on those hulls on a cat. Don't want to nose dive.

And lots of political and religious paraphernalia to share with everyone you meet.

I just wonder where you have come across a used Outbound 52?

Actually it's pretty hard to imagine circumstances where a 52 foot mono would be more comfortable than a 56 foot cat.

Its even harder to imagine where you would haul out a 56ft cat or even where you would park it.

Plenty of places you can do it, just not neccessarily cheap. But on a 56' cat, living on the anchor shouldn't be too much of a hardship.

I dont think so, most monos will broach long before most cats look at have any great issue.
