Re: Help me find the right boat - 45'ish performance cruising cat

Hi Phil,

It was very nice meeting you and spending time on your yacht at the boat show">Annapolis Boat Show. The prospect of taking delivery in Hong Kong is very appealing to us since it's my gal's residence and my second home. Still in the researching phase.

Best of luck with your venture...

Jerry

Re: Help me find the right boat - 45'ish performance cruising cat

Mike, the Leopard cats are of a very different quality than some of the others under discussion. They are relatively heavy cats, balsa core, but offer nice interior volumes and comforts for some. They are very afforable cats. As a yacht broker I find that when I know a person's budget, and agenda, it is fairly easy for me to get a sense of what a buyer is best fit for. In any specific price point there are a range of boats, some of which fit some better than others. You can always buy a used Leopard, Lagoon, or FP that is far newer for the same money as a higher performance cat, a cat that cost a
lot more to construct. They all work, you just want to find the one that works for you, your budget, spatial needs, payload needs, quality needs, performance needs, etc.

Couple of corrections:

Excellent advertising copy Phil.
The real story is that Montebello built survey and non survey versions, and a power cat. The real story is that they weren't "in trouble" they went broke and the liquidators offered the moulds to a range of people, I inspected them and other assets at the Gold Coast (not Brisbane) but didn't see the value in them. I also was involved in discussions (not as a principal but as a secondary investor with another party) with Lee but he wanted to make the boat heavier not lighter, adding more crap to it. I couldn't see that working.

As for your assertion that you can't build anything in Australia, yes it is difficult for a volume production builder but there are some fantastic custom builders, Noosa Marine for example who have built many G Force Schionnings, you know, the reverse bow design you - ahem flatteringly imitated.

As for you assertion that an O45 is an inferior boat - Seriously, that is starting to go just a bit over the top, even for this place.

I don't see alot of correcting

In trouble vs went broke. Pretty similar and both bad

Heavy not good. Seems to be agreement on that

Expensive to build in Australia vs there are good boats made in Australia seem like they are addressing current points.

The other issue about selling the balance into Australia is of course currency exchange. If the boat is built in US dollars then the current rate of 75 cents makes for a big hit and then there is GSt of 10% and duty of 5% if applicable

[QUOTE=Phillip Berman;21817
I am a bit surprised that Aussie's are not all over this
boat given her location and price and the fact that she sails so much
better than the production cats - has nice boards, a super Selden rig,
real cabinet grade interior. [/QUOTE]

Could it be that perhaps we're smarter than you think??

Re: Help me find the right boat - 45'ish performance cruising cat

Anyway............................................ .........

We settle today.

Its a Schionning Waterline 1480 in North Queensland. I went up last week and spent a day and night on it while it was surveyed. We beached it on a sand bank and spent the bottom of the tide checking it out then went for a morning sail around the islands. I have been dealing directly with the owner which has been great.

He was kind enough to agree to sail it back with me so I can learn a bit along the way. We are waiting for a good weather window to bring it back, hopefully the week after next.

It has most of my wish list. We will probably make a few changes but we will live with it for a few runs and see what really is and isn't important.

Thanks again for everyone's input, I'm happy I have made the right descission.

Regards
Dave

Margaritaville was on our list as well. I expect you'll be very happy with her.

Cheers,
