I do not like panel construction like Schionnings and that Oram. I worked on a Schionning and had to look close up and personal at the construction too many times to seriously consider one as a viable serious cruising boat. Note, however that they were built in many yards and so their quality may differ vastly from builder to builder.

Then look at the 'scoops' on that Oram - you are buying a 40'er actually.

As re Catana 47 speed - Catanas come in flavours, the boatyard flirsts with speed only to produce a tub next year. I have sailed a 471 model years ago and by that time standards she outperformed cruising cats by a margin. Alas, she was not great in light conditions without a kite.

All this pretty irrelevant though as neither offers flip up rudders.

Plenty of them, mainly custom, but A few production boats have dagger rudders

Yep, Bob Oram doesn't look to cram the maximum possible accommodation into a given length, the way the charter boat manufacturers do.

More the opposite, extend the waterline and create a big "footprint" for a smaller cost. The result is a very easily driven, sea kindly boat.

So it's a pointless exercise to compare a 60 foot Oram's accommodation to a 60 or so foot Lagoon or FP. It would be equally pointless to compare their performance.

All comes down to your Budget , but if I was buying new again , and had a lazy 700 to 800 k lying in my bank account I would be going with the Seawind 1600 with outboards which Could be added as an option and leave the deisel off the boat, same as what they offer for the 1190. This would then tick all your boxes but probably blow the Budget..,,

If your budget is dependent on how many of those boxes you can check, look at the 1160 and see if you'll be able to live with galley down.

The 1160 sail well but I wouldn't put them in the category of "performance cat" ,

Performance to me means you can sail above wind speeds which I cannot do on my 1160 , normally we are around 2 knots off true wind , but it's not a boat you will be sailing at a constant 15 knots which is what you would expect from a " performance cat"

Cannot regard the SW 1600 as a performance boat with a 13T displacement.

Compare this to the Balance 526 at 9T or the O51 at 10T.

SW1600 just another cruising boat IMO.

As you comment elsewhere, better to take the advice of experts, unless they are proven wrong, and Berman and Paarmen claim the manufactured and launched Balance 526 weighs in at 9.3T.


Now, this is not out of the realm of possibility as the O51 is nominally 10T but Francois told me that a carbon bimini and a carbon mast will save over half a tonne in weight. The first Balance 526 has both. It also has all furniture fabricated out of lightweight materials.


Obviously this comes at an expense and I would hate to think how much that first Balance 526 cost the owner, but it would have been North of U$2 million I would think.


Similarly if you want a lightweight O51 this can be accommodated but the costs really mount up.


These weights are achievable but at considerable expense.
