Hamilton Island Race week

Absolutely agree Hoppy. I was just focussing on the Cruising division, but the racing division is very interesting as well. Zero is a stunning boat, with a crew fairly new to the racing game. Earthling is a forerunner to Stardust, and that is an interesting comparison to watch.

Factor, I am definitely uninitiated. How does the math work on the handicapping. FP 0.580 while Jennings 0.840. How does that work out to 16 minutes over an hour?

60 minutes is multiplied by .58 for a corrected time of 34.8 minutes
60 minutes is multiplied by .84 for a corrected time of of 50.4 minutes

I am surprised that the FP is estimated to be slower than the lagoon 40. Also surprised that many of the Seawinds are presumed faster than the Catana. Some of the seawinds are in fact charter boats being rented by people for the series!. Se how it goes after the first race or so, its a hard job handicapping a non measured formula. Great field of 28 boats.

For the uninitiated the numbers are the handicap. So the handicappers are estimating that in every hour the FP 50 will be 16 minutes slower than the fastest boat (the Jenkins - Owner designed and built). Wish I was there, should be much fun!

Ok time for todays update.

Once again the Outremer 45 proved it is no match in the speed department
for the Montebello 12.5 by finishing over 5 minutes behind, on elapsed time.

The Nautitech Open 40 was very similar in speed to the Outremer, being pipped to the line by 3 minutes in the almost 5 hour race.

Please note these are not handicap results we are talking , but genuine boat for boat course times.

And both are well slower than a Seawind 1160

Hey Factor. Maybe that Seawind is very well sailed and/ or modified? If I'm reading correctly, they beat the next 1160 by half an hour. Very interesting.

Too true. I'm a multihull newbie but I'd read that Outremers had a reputation for performance. I'll look up Open 40. Always learning

Yes it is very well sailed and has good sails and a transom extension. That is one of the things from events like this, you can see how a boat that is optimised, i.e. made as good as it can be, with all the little things done right, as well as quality sails, a clean bottom etc etc, can make a big difference.

The Open 40 is no surprise, have yet to see one live up to marketing hype.
