Gunboats: Any First-Hand Info ?

When I dream I dream about really fast and great looking sailboats. I was hopeing some one on CF had been passed by a Gunboat or seen one at a boat show. I've seen the U-tube vidios ,I just wanted first hand info.

I saw one at Annapolis a few Years ago. It was awesome. That's the end of my report. I didn't pay too much attention because it was a FEW mil out of my price range.

We raced our monohull in Antigua Race Week 2008 and there were two Gunboats in the multi fleet. Awesome performance boats, these are the first multihulls I've ever desired. Got to climb over one post race. They do seem to have a good build standard but boy, all that high tech composite means they are beyond my current budget!

I finally discovered why the owners of the cats I would love to own, all seem to lust for Gunboats. I have always got a kick how automotive journalists coin phrases for cars they liked during testing, but Dec 2010 of Sail magazine had a quote that was just too good to pass up........"Opulent luxury meets speed-freak performance". The 66' Gunboat they tested ran at 24 kts in 21 kts of wind. No wonder the performance minded folks all want a Gunboat.

They are first class boats, both performance wise, and ergonomics wise.

For instance, they were willing to sacrifice a little extra windage of a larger deckhouse to retain that wonderfull big open raised saloon area available in catamarans.

Then have a look at their future project (55), and its new take on that 'open' saloon.

You've got to pay for all that carbon-fiber construction, particularly as this material is so sought after for military purposes these days.

They are not a little spartan inside in order to save weight?

They would be my first choice if I had the bucks.

Was out on a 54' sloop running 10-14knts surfing waves. Gunboat gained on us quickly, rolled up headsail and continued to zip by us under main alone!!! I was able to speak with crew later and they said they had been running in the 20s with sails up, slowed to teens under main. Sweet boats.

from Annapolis Last year. Very impressive fit and finish. Definitely not Spartan. I was especially impressed with the engine rooms and mechanical compartments.

I cant wait to see the new 60 that's coming soon.

They have had rudder failure problems in the past. They don't carry much fuel for cruising if the wind goes away but they are very fast in a breeze.

I would rather have a Chris White 57. Semi custom, well designed for cruising and well built and if you want, can be quite fast.

I have not heard if a cat built by Chris White winning any races that a Gunboat was in, Have you?

Any photos of engine room/mech installations.

The engineering/electricall installations make or break any boats but not so many emphasize it enough.
