Gunboat 60 Production To Be Moved From China To North Carolina

This bit is the only news I found on this.

"The Gunboat 55, designed by Nigel Irens, is the first boat to come out of Gunboat’s new production yard in North Carolina. Production of the Gunboat 60, formerly built in China, is also being moved here."

From this.
2014 NEWPORT INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW: Gunboat 55, Varianta 37, Salona 33, C&C Redline 41 | Sailfeed

There's nothing on the GB site or anywhere else. I read an earlier story about how GB founder and owner Peter Johnstone was up quite a bit at night trying to keep things going in both plants which are a half a day apart time zonewise. I wonder if it just got to be too much? The Chinese GBs were subcontracted out to an established boat builder there I believe. And/or built under license.
The new GB4 is being built in Denmark FWIW.

Re: Gunboat 60 Production To Be Moved From China To North Carolina

I was told at the Newport show that indeed the production of the 60 will be moving from China to the US (Wanchese in North Carolina)

The G4 is being built in Holland (Netherlands) not Denmark

Re: Gunboat 60 Production To Be Moved From China To North Carolina

I read that it cost $130,000 to get the boats on a yacht transport to the US east coast. Also just to do a seatrial on your brand new GB required a $500 pilot fee to just to get it out of port. Sure seems like a lot of hassle and unnecessary expense. Also the Chinese pose really high tariffs on a lot of those imported parts that are essential in the yacht building trades. The cheap labor may not be justifiable when everything else is so expensive.

Re: Gunboat 60 Production To Be Moved From China To North Carolina

All GE appliance manufacturing was moved from China to the USA. Not sure where Electorlux will be building them (they recently bought the GE appliance division), but I have to assume they will also stay in the US.

Labor in China is getting more expensive, and shipping is now an major part of the costs.
