"Gullwing" bridgedecks

The makers of designs with gullwing bridgedecks as seen on some Lagoons, Catanas and Australian cats claim that this decreases pounding. Anybody have any practical experience with these?

If they work as claimed they would be a good way to provide increased stiffness as well as a bit of storage beneath the saloon and cockpit soles.

Some other designer's have said that by having the pod or gullwing type arangement that you have a lump of boat near the water to infact "be pounded".

I tend to agree, and think that bridgedeck clearance [and waterline length] is everything.

I have only one experience with this arrangement, which was on a Lagoon 420. Just outside of the Miami marina with lots of big powerboat wakes. It cut right through them without a sound or impact.
