Re: GreenCat 605 first pictures

After the usual hiccups she was launched today and floats high , higher than expected and
All systems like the swing keels and the electric retractable motors worked fine.
I have added a few more pictures and as can be seen she really needs the rig to get her to set in to the water instead of on top David, about 3000 kilos will be added until she is ready to sail to the Pacific South sea estimated total weight 16.5 tons. She should be performing well.
In the last picture she is moored next to the old Motor yacht from Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, it must be from the late fifty's

Re: GreenCat 605 first pictures

16.5 tons and it still rides high? How is it performing? Is this the electric drive model?

Re: GreenCat 605 first pictures

16.5 tons for a cat this size is really not much, keep in mind that she is almost 62 feet in lenght and a beam of 31 ft yes she will ride high, with her 235 M2 meters of sail upwind she should really sail fast, it is the electric retractable version with swing keels build completely in carbon/kevlar/pvc foam and epoxy thru infusion , our usual process, no gell coat but 2 k paint , all is done to save on weight.
That weight includes all to go cruising including a RIB outboard full diesel and water etc.
For each added 365 kilo she sinks in 1 cm and presently we still are 260 below the actual water line, off course the rig Carbon mast and boom and pbo rigging and all the sails will add 600 kg but she will still be among the lightests cats in her class.
I recall the Gunboat 60 was about 17000 kilo empty.
The estimated sail area to displacement ratio is 35 so she should be fast.
I have attached pictures of the 20 Kw Motogens and the hydraulically activated swing keels

Re: GreenCat 605 first pictures

The swing keels are interesting. I can't find anything about them on your website. Can you explain them a bit more? Can they deploy/retract while under sail? Are they curved just so they will retract into the hull? Seems like a lot of load on a small pivot point. Does the retract cutout effect water flow and turbulence?

Re: GreenCat 605 first pictures

Hallo Mark

yes they can pivot while under sail, the cutout is curved so it has a small effect on water flow, the foils are wing shaped so they give some lift if in the 90 degree position or when the leeward foil is down to increase pointing.
They are both driven by dual hydraulic actuators , there are overpressure valves build in so if the pressure on the leeward side becomes to high the foil will pivot inward to prevent going over.
When fully retracted there is limited effect on the flow of water. see picture
The connnecting points are solid carbon bulkheads that hold the actuators and shafts.
