Good boat for two families

Hi all Not going to be buying for quite some time and will of course look myself at many boats and do some charters of the most likely but here is the question: what would you recommend in general for two families with kids.

I am thinking two double/queen berths and then as many single bunks as possible (4+). Berths need not be fancy. I have been thinking catamaran but open to mono too.

Any general advice? How easy would it be to rip out a standard double berth and pack it with bunks? How many could I fit?

For two families, I think the best would be a catamaran, there's enough space for live aboard with children's.

Are you planning a circumnavigation?

Not a full circumnavigation at this point. Maybe the Carib plus pacific circle one day

According to Ian Nicolson: The minimum dimensions of a man's berth should be;

Length-6'4"
Width at shoulders and hips- 1'9"
Width at foot-1'1"
Width at Head-1'4"

In my opinion it all depends on your space allotted. Generally if there is a two person berth already, the best you are going to achieve on a refit of any type is... two people. Most builders do not allot excess space when placing berths. Trying to jam 3 or 4 in same space does not cut it if journeys are more than a weekend.

There are a lot of boats in that range with bunks inside. In some Mono-Hulls for example. Have you ever chartered boat with both families? I think this is the best recommendation, to feel the difference between a Catamaran and Mono-Hull.

Does Ian have any info on kids? Ideally two queenish berth for two parents sets and then as many kids bunks as possible. If anyone has any experience on setting up multiple (little) kids berths I would love to hear. If one of the berths (of four I guess) could be converted between living and sleeping space so much the better.
