Getting Rigging Done on a Budget. Ideas?
I'm doing some numbers on the catamaran.
The rig is the biggest single problem with the budget. I have professional quotes in the $60,000+ range for mast, sails and boom. This is an expense I'm trying to find ways to reduce so I can go with the cat.
I need a 60-65' spar, standard fractional rigging as most catamarans have, a boom, a furler for a big downwind sail and the self tacking jib. Plus I need all those sails. I can live without a rotating mast.
How can one go about finding all of this stuff used and getting it all to work together?
Also very easy sail handling is needed so my 90lbs girlfriend can handle sails if necessary. Electric winches maybe for that I'm thinking?
Also furling main would be greatly preferred to give better reefing control. Ie: just a washcloth of main out in the worst of the worst.
Where do I even begin to try to put something like this together outside of the normal channels of just dropping $60,000-$75,000 and having a rig apear on my boat?

Gumtree and patience is what you need. There are a couple of big sticks advertised on Gumtree. As for sales, I got some cheap headsails from Gumtree and got my main made by Rolly Tasker for a really competitive price.
Cheers

Just noticed a carbon mainsail of a 50 foot cat for sale on the Facebook page Aussie Yachtie Buy Sell and Swap.
Cheers

If you can weld aluminium, you can actually put a rig together quite economically.
The bare extrusions, mast, boom, spreaders are quite cheap.
A lot of the expense is in the labour that goes into fabricating all the fittings, like spreader to mast joins, sheave boxes, masthead crane, mast step, gooseneck and so on.
But if you can fab and weld these yourself, the actual materials don't cost much.
Nyalic instead of anodizing works well.
Synthetic rigging saves on swaging etc.
There's a company in Tasmania that makes high quality furlers at far better prices than the "name" brands. Almast spars. Not sure if they're available in the US, but with the present exchange rate, it would be worth importing one.

Re: Getting Rigging Done on a Budget. Ideas?
Thanks for this input. Much appreciated.
I definitely don't know how to weld or own any of the equipment. However, maybe hiring a low cost machine shop or fabricator would work for this?
Maybe a few things could be put on with fasteners?

Budget and electric winches and furling are opposed to each other.

A properly prepared and applied Nyalic clear-coating should give a minimum of 3 years protection, and can last considerably longer (there are examples of Nyalic-coated boats still looking good after 12 years!).

Usually, but not necessarily. They use automotive starter motors for many windlasses. Furlers aren't really complicated pieces of equipment. You need something that spins over (or contained within) something else. At the basic of each of these, they aren't complicated or expensive. They only get that way when marketed to sailors. I'm thinking maybe some home brew stuff here or used.
I have all of this on my monohull right now. I venture to bet a lot of larger, older monohulls languishing and decaying have them on board as well for used sources.
In any case, the bigger the boat, the more you need these things. And with a 60ft stick (68' air draft), I'm thinking having some help with the physics involved will be a good idea.

OP, unfortunately, is in the States where we don't seem to have any of the good stuff available in OZ.
That includes lightweight prefinished panels for interiors, the Duflex panel 44CruisiungCat built his boat out of, etc. The list goes on and on with great products people don't bring to the states.

Hmmm... maybe it's worthwhile to learn aluminum welding considering the off the shelf prices for these things.

That rules out Gumtree.
I recall Soma on the SA forum commenting that he knew about a big stick in the states. Perhaps you should PM him. I think he's on here too but not as much.
