I think I recall him saying the same thing.

This is a perfect example of just because a boat CAN do a passage, does not mean it SHOULD be used, even with experienced sailors.

There are some on this board that think just because brand XYZ did it once, that means the boat is now great for "bluewater".

I have always had a bit of a soft spot for the Geminis, and I am not a cat person. They have done a remarkable job of producing a boat suited to its purpose, which is coastal and Caribbean, even though I know of at least one that went RTW (Slapdash). That couple are fellow Canucks, albeit from Vancouver.

Re: Gemini 105 transatlantic.

They mention a " life altering experience" Does anyone know what happened? I saw they had a drogue out at one time.
The boat seemed to do OK, lots of "noise". As long as I know what is making noise on my boat I don't care.

Re: Gemini 105 transatlantic.

Those two have my respect for completing that crossing in a Gemini double handed. I wouldn't sign on for that.

More like coastal and Bahamas. Parts of the Carib can be reasonably doable - it's getting there that is dicey, IMHO.

Its a small Catamaran with a lowish clearance. Its going to be noisy in big seas. They hit 18 Knots wave sliding hence the drogue.
I was impressed. A lot of small Cats have crossed both ways. Catalac, Heavenly twins, Prout, Wharrams etc.

Nice video. Enjoyed it.

Re: Gemini 105 transatlantic.

This is old news from several years ago.

I believe the guy was pushing 70, so that may have played a part in it. The stories I've heard had nothing to do with the boats capability or safety but it sounded like it was just hard on an old guy.

Also, if I remember correctly, they took the northern route at the wrong time of the year. Doubt there would be many "blue water" boats of similar size (cat or mono) that would be comfortable in similar conditions.

In addition to Slapdash doing a circumnavigation, I know of several transatlantic and Hawaii runs with no issues.

Of course, we plan to ship ours when go to europe but that is because we find offshore runs boring and prefer coastal cruising.

Its a very sturdy and firm vessel. A lot of the British designs are. Boatman61 took a Catalac Cat from the UK to Southern Spain smaller than this one with no worries.

Tony Smith designed an excellent vessel in the Gemini. They all came from the same pool of designers so characteristics cross from one vessel to the other from that era.

No, keep me on your list. Just specify the boat, timing, and route ahead of time. I'm old enough to be picky....

Re: Gemini 105 transatlantic.

If I recall correctly Tony Smith had to do this voyage to make the Gemini certifiable for selling in Europe. From what I've heard Tony has always marketed the Gemini as being a coastal cruiser and not blue water. We have owned quite a few cruising cats including a Gemini and I would definitely rate the Gemini as a great coastal cruiser, but blue water.......

Its not a vessel I would regularly like to cross oceans with. However, set up right, good crew, it will be fine. Its reassuring to know it CAN do it.

I will let you take the chances as it seems you're sure it would be fine for crossing oceans:-). Let's face it, the French would and could sail a bath tub across the Atlantic but does that mean the bathtub is an ocean going vessel?
