First link I looked at from the gCaptain newsletter. Whattaride...

Then sent it to my Coastie kids with the same suggestion (mostly desk and air now though).
That 43' tri looked like a Hobie Cat busting surf (used to be my favorite pastime off SPI).

Australia has just gone through a time of asking the theme question as to where our patrol submarines should be built. The former government (same party but different leaders) were intending to purchase Japanese subs for Australia and also considered American and British built. Despite the fact that Australia built the last class and is quite capable of making our own. The new leadership has committed to making most of them in Australia.

Why? Australian tax dollars should be used to support Australian jobs. It's that simple. It's a different thing if we don't have the ability such as with our replacement air force jets, but marine vessels, we are quite capable of making.

It's the citizens of the united states paying the taxes that pay for it. So when the US government buy products that are made in the USA they support the same citizens that make it all possible in the first place.

The United States has a trade imbalance that is more than 7 times larger than any other nation on earth has.

Now your just being pedantic. I didn't suggest every single thing has to be Australian. Far from it.

Australia is quickly following the United States. A country that once built the best car's in the world now hardly build any and entire cities have shut down with hundreds of thousands of it's citizens out of work and loosing their houses. Australia used to build all three major car brands including it's own. What car do we build now? None! And many thousands put out of work.

If we can build a quality product, and marine vessels we have repeatedly proven we can, then the Australian tax dollar should be spent at home, and the same for the U.S.A. Obviously, any components that don't meet the quality required or the quantity, are purchased from overseas.

Nope. Anything used for national security needs to be able to be supported within the country where it's being used. Especially in times of conflict. If you source your major system overseas, you have only yourself to blame when they cut off your supply of spares and upgrades.

I was involved in a lot of MCM programs for quite a while. I remember having very similar discussions when Canada was first working on the specifications for the MCDV program. I made a few trips out to MacDonald Dettweiler in BC working on this stuff. Our underwater acoustic tracking system was installed on those, and I was product manager for that system.

I asked the Canadian Navy people at the meetings why they were building steel boats with degaussing coils in them when the entire rest of the world was pretty much going with low-magnetic designs. I had just spent a couple weeks on the HATs and SATs with the Italian Gaeta class in La Spezia, and I was WAY impressed with the Italian boats. The Canadian answer was national security. Canada did not ( at that time) have the capability "in house" to build FRP hulls big enough, so they went with steel. Just so they could be sure they could get parts, or more boats, when they wanted them.

There are a lot of other reasons to source these things from home, but that's an overriding one. To control the supply and design.

It's also a whole lot easier to keep the new secret stuff secret when people on the other side of the world are not involved in the design, but that's another thing entirely.

Exactly, keep the jobs at home. Besides, the best engineers in the world are in the United States.
