Freebird Catamarans?

I'm looking at a Freebird 50 cat that's for sale.

I've never heard of this company...does anybody know anything about them, good or bad?

Performance, comfort and seaworthiness! Lovely classic British cat.

What year? Cutter or sloop rigged?

Re: Freebird Catamarans?

If it's this one then she has been for sale a long time, maybe 2 to 3 years. She was originally listed around $900K I think. Even with the price drop she might still be overpriced considering she is 21 years old. Looks nice though with lots of new stuff.

I sailed one on a BVI charter a number of years ago. The boat sailed well and the construction seemed to be above average quality. I believe they were made by the same builder that is now building the Discovery 50.

Re: Freebird Catamarans?

I guess I was wrong about the old price and the time up for sale. She was listed for $544,000 over 4 years ago. Interesting that they are asking $106K more now.

Hi,

Freebirds were built by Nortshore, builders of Southerly swing keel monohulls and some other brands.
Nothing to do with Discovery Yachts, except both companies are high - end British production builders.
Anyway - one can not do wrong buying Nortshore built yacht, I think.

Cheers,

Tomasz

Re: Freebird Catamarans?

Thanks for your comments everyone, all sounds very positive except maybe the price.

Anyone care to throw a number out, what you think would be a realistic price for a boat like this...21 years old but well maintained and in good condition, new motors/saildrives?

Re: Freebird Catamarans?

I'm thinkin 4 to 5K. Could be less. The location can greatly affect a boats value. Many places in the So Pacific are somewhat inaccessible or corrupt like Tonga. Parts can be real hard to get and can have huge import fees in addition to the already formidable delivery costs. It's kinda funny that people want to sail to these areas but not want to buy a boat there.

I presume that's 4-500K ?

I'd go with that, but I'd expect it to be in the top half of that range.

Re: Freebird Catamarans?

Yes 400K to 500K. I just think the boat is too old for such a high price. There are 5 to 7 year old Lagoon 500s with an asking price that's lower than their asking price. That's the competition and that's what people look at. And it hasn't sold in 4 years so that tells you something.

This link no longer works and we are looking at a Freebird 50. By any chance do you recall the name of this cat? Thanks
