Finally opened up a Silver Task light for a bulb change.

Here’s the process.
1) Tilt up the light so you see the penny slot on the bottom

2) Insert a penny and twist to pry the lens off

3) Pull on the lens so it comes out about 3/4 of and inch. The bell reflector will come out with the lens.

4) Squeeze the bell reflector with one hand and with the other hand turn the lens counter clock wise until it stops and pull the lens off

5) Now you can remove and install a new bulb

Note: Never handle a good halogen bulb with your hands, because the oils from your fingers will shorten the life of a new bulb.

Note: These lights have 10 Watt Halogen bulbs installed

Is it just the "globe" or the globe and reflector that is replaced?

Does anyone out there have the folding props and have you had any problems with abnormal wear? It looks like after less than 2 years both my props are so worn they need to be replaced.

Daniel,

Neither, globe or bell reflector are replaced just the bulb.
Just reach into the bell Reflector and grab the Halogen glass bulb inside then just pull it out.

Sounds like a Prop Zinc problem.
See attached photos of the zincs.
Just replaced them in the water with a 4mm wrench and a mask and snorkel.
Takes about 10 minutes per prop.

My two mechanics dont think the problem is with the zincs because the damage is only in the gears and no where else. The local Volvo guy is also stumped and they are investigating further. It is a VERY expensive fix so if there is a problem with the build of the folding props I want to know.

That is an excellent weather site, I used it on our last Bahamas trip, also try www.GRIB.US You will have to load an applet, but it is very useful and you can save the downloads. It helps when you don't have WiFi for a few days.

Can you take some picture of the Folding Prop gear damage ?

Did your mechanics say that not enough Lithum Gease was used on the gear mesh surfaces?

They didnt mention grease. The props have been sent to Volvo to take a look because local volvo guy hasnt seen anything like this in the folding props before. I will try to get a picture when the props come back.

A word of warning about your bow rollers: last week Sydney was hit by a dust storm for the first time in history. Winds probably gusted up to low 30s. On Saturday, I went to check on our Mahe 36. It was gusting up to 33 kts while I was there. No waves to speak of, but the boat was swinging constantly on her mooring.

Good thing I checked on the boat because the bow roller had sheared off, and the mooring rope was sweeping over the broken bits of rivet, back & forth constantly, and was badly chafed by the time I saw the damage.

Have any of you guys encountered this problem, or done anything to make the roller more secure?

We spent the weekend on the boat up in Pittwater/Refuge Bay and it certainly was windy.

I must say I thought that there was plenty of shearing pressure on the bowroller but nothing seemed amiss. I will check next weekend.

I notice from your photos that you bought a gennaker/screecher. Who did you end up buying it from?

How are you two using the bowroller when you are on a mooring? Am I confusing an anchoring with a mooring ball? Here we don't use the bowroller at all except as a last resort. We use it for a "Bahamian mooring" with 2 anchors, or before we grab a mooring (ball). For a mooring ball, we have prepared 2 lines secure at each port and starboard bow cleats. We then grab the mooring ring and tread either the port or starboard line through the mooring eye and secure it back to the cleat it was tied to, then we do the same thing with the other line.
Now the boat is secure via a bridal and can be adjusted as needed at each cleat. It really cuts down on chafe. As a back up, I tie a third line to the mooring ball and secure that one through the roller and back to the cleat in the anchor locker, leaving some slack in this line, allowing the bridal to do its job. We have been in some serious storms on a mooring ball (winds in the 45 to 50 knot range) in the Bahamas, we have seen many a mooring ball break free. The maintanance on some is questionable, so I dive on the questionable ones to check and secure a line on the chain itself.

Hi all,
Could anyone of you inform me on the merits of the Square Top mainsail? It looks as if this is now supplied on the Mahe as standard.
What are the advantages and disadvantages? Do you get more flaping of the top of the sail when you are in weak-wind conditions with waves, causing the top of the mast to swing considerably? Should you expect more wear? Did anybody have problems with it?
I would really appreciate all information!
