Fontain Pajot upgrade costs?

I'm considering buying an 11 year old used Athena 38, that I know will need some work. Can anyone here give me at least a ballpark idea (or more accurate estimate based on recently doing some of these) of how much the following items would potentially cost and maybe some recommendations on where to get the best deals on various parts like standing rigging or a good trampoline?:

Haul out
New bottom paint
Sail drive gaskets replaced (parts & labor)
Engines serviced
New fuel/oil filters, etc.
Replace trampoline
Replace standing rigging
Replace running rigging & two halyards
New jib w/ sunbrella material
Refrigeration condenser
Add holding tanks
Add lazy jacks
Add stack pack
Add new zincs
Starboard engine doesn't go into reverse (cable needs to be replaced)
200' new galvanized chain/anchor rode
Clean out fuel tanks (whats the process for this?)

Thanks!

Sundowner, if your profile told us a bit more someone might be able to help, as US and EU prices are probably different...

I can give you an idea on some of these items, but these are EU based.. let me know if that will help.

Yes, US dollars would be best as my currency conversion skills are currently lacking somewhat! ;-) Thanks.

I can attemp to give you an idea of what the costs up here in Northern Europe are:

Haul out 600 one way
New bottom paint
depends on condition of the exsisting base, from 600 to 3000
Sail drive gaskets replaced (parts & labor) gaskets are 400 each, 3 hours/engine
Engines serviced from 300 and up depending what needs doing
New fuel/oil filters, etc. 30 dollars/piece plus labour
Replace trampoline. Factory net type around 400, others more
Replace standing rigging
Replace running rigging & two halyards depends on what rope. 4-6 hours
New jib w/ sunbrella material, 3000-6000
Refrigeration condenser around 400-600 including labour
Add holding tanks 3000-5000
Add lazy jacks do it yourself for 50
Add stack pack around 500-800
Add new zincs 100 plus labour 1-2 hours
Starboard engine doesn't go into reverse (cable needs to be replaced)
200' new galvanized chain/anchor rode
Clean out fuel tanks (whats the process for this?) Remove if possible, take cover off, flush/wash and flush with diesel before remounting. 3-4 hours work per tank.

I hope this gives you some idea, others can maybe add/adjust..

regards

Alan

Thanks Alan. Anyone else chime in so I can get some reasonable averages, especially with good places to get some of this done in the Caribbean , or recommended online companies for parts...

You need to bring your boat into a boatyard and get a quote straight from the horses mouth. Nobody online without seeing your boat and without knowing which boatyard you are going into, is going to be able to give you an accurate estimate.

Hi David!
I'm aware of this and not looking for an exact quote, just ballpark figures based on the experience and real life scenarios of others who have done similar work on an Athena 38 or equivalent type/size cat so I can know what I’m getting into, hence the beauty of this type of forum for people to ask for help from others more knowledgeable then themselves. I don't own the boat yet and don't live near a boatyard, so want to get some general idea of costs to help me determine the value of my investment is this particular boat that I know will need some work. Thanks.

So, just as a ballpark...

For general "make it good", one can spend 20-40K pretty easily?

It all depends on how much you can do yourself. If you hire out you're gonna be spending some serious cake. And not telling what else you may find wrong along the way. Unless you're quite a handyman with a lot of experience with boats I'd say you're best to find one that doesn't require as much work. That way you'll be able to spend more time enjoying the boat sailing instead of stuck in a boat yard trying to tackle all those projects.

Try Puerto Del Rey, in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.

Tim, for what, general boat yard, haulouts, etc. or was there something specific there (a particular service or mechanic) that you found to be very reasonable? I have been there and it is a beautiful marina and boat facility....one of the best I've ever seen. Do you know that they have free golf cart service that will take you back and forth from your slip when you are docked there? Very nice...

Sundowner, Puerto Del Rey has a bunch of good subcontractors that could be very useful for a refit, and it is in the Caribbean . Haulouts, summer storage, fiberglass work, welding, all of these things are good there, and I think most everything else. There is a guy we really like who is also a mechanic, and who can undertake just about anything or find someone else who can. He is a Dane, formerly an engineer in fishing boats, and a really good, honest guy. He will wind up being a friend, if you use him.

The Marina is good, and yes, we have used those golf carts many times. But we now actually prefer a different marina in Fajardo, a brand new one named Sun Bay. Much cheaper and very, very nice, and well run. Great people. but there is no boat yard.

Puerto Rico has several advantages: Cheap(er) flights, part of the US, two large West Marines, US Mail, lots of industrial support, fairly inexpensive, and wonderful people. Horrendous drivers, however, so keep your insurance updated, not to mention your health care! On the other hand, if there is a hurricane, only Puerto Rico and the USVI would have FEMA's resources and the National Guard, which could be very useful.

The BVI also has several good yards and lots of good tradesmen, who have gravitated there to take care of all the charter boats. It is a lot more expensive, however, and if you are a private boat, there may be times of the year (near our Boat Shows) where you may be pushed to the back of the line behind the charter boats that are the tradesmen's bread and butter. Nanny Cay would be top of the list, and Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor would not be too far behind.
