Fly Screens

Been to quite a few buggy places. Just wondering how cats with huge openings to the saloon cope with mosquitoes/ march flies/ sand flies etc?

Re: Fly screens.

Bugs are a big problem is South Florida. I bought the enclosure package that seals off the saloon with sunbrella, mosquito screens and plastic screens. I added my own mosquito screens for the front ports to get flow through ventilation. It works fine for bugs but a fan is still needed on hot calm nights.

Re: Fly screens.

On my forward deck hatches I have mosquito nets which fit over the opened hatch and are held down by in-built weighted cord.

All the dorade ventilators have in-built screening.

For the forward facing hatches on my saloon roof I knocked up some spare mosquito netting and fix it in place with Velcro.

On the saloon door I have house-hold, weighted mosquito netting for doors in four sections for ease of access.

On the doors to my aft cabins again more house-hold mosquito netting and mosquito screens on the portlights. And still I have mosquito spray in reach of my bunk!

Re: Fly Screens.

I fabricated my own screens, similar to what ms6 has done.

I have a draped screen going over the pop-top with weights in a sleeve around its perimeter, over the companionway opening it hangs down, with snaps to the door sides and weights at the bottom. I have also netting that goes over my opened hatch with weights along its perimeter.

They're easy to fabricate. I used a serger to make them.

I buy my netting from Sailmaker's Supply (Sunbrella, Marine Canvas, Fabrics, Hardware and Supplies - Sailmaker's Supply). My weights are marbles, which I bought at a dollar store (were for putting in flower vases), although I've heard of people using sand but I should think that might be messy if it gets wet.

tamif27, I like your idea of marbles! Some of those nets one can buy at chandleries come without any weighting material and sand does not appeals to me, had been thinking of small stainless steel nuts but your idea will leave me standing at the starting blocks money wise!

Reading this made me think of this commercial

I imagine this could be a good solution on a Cat with a large opening - probably wouldn't be too hard to make your own custom version either.

Would magnetic strips interfere with electronics?

Re: Fly Screens.

I did this:
Sail Delmarva: Banning Bugs - Slider Screen for a PDQ 32

Tip: Mosquito netting sort of sticks to Velcro hook tape on it's own. This helps seal bug-leaks in places you might not want to have the net solidily attached.

Re: Fly Screens.

We did ours the cheap way: hook velcro on the screens, loop velcro around the hatches (so that when the screens are off, you don't have the hooks catching everything that rubs across the base of the hatch, like hair and hats), and put them up when we're really close to shore and absolutely have to have screens. Otherwise, no screens: they block airflow. That said, we also have two down-the-hatch windscoops that we place over the largest hatches, and they do deliver some air even when the screen is up.

The night of the no-see-ums, we had a giant box window fan in the forward hatch outside the screens and slept under it, because the no-see-ums were small enough that they could land and crawl through the holes in mosquito screen (the black nylon kind). A lady ashore then gave us a vial of dark brown poison to keep the no-see-ums out or kill them when they landed. Never seen the stuff for sale anywhere.

Thanks for all that- really like the term no-see-ums. Very apt. I've seen some cats that even seem to have their cockpits bug- proofed. I guess another solution is to always anchor way out? Way, way out.

Re: Fly Screens.

True. The further from shore, the fewer the bugs.

Mind if I come over for a cold brew? I am eschewing modern conveniences that I have to pay for.

Re: Fly Screens.

We have a Phantom bug screen door on our 44 cat - works great.
Lowes sells them and you can get them custom made for your sliding door.
