Fishing net as tramp-Can anyone recommend the best material?

Hi,

I am looking into replacing my f wd tramp.

Wanted to use Dyneema net but failed to source it for a reasonable price.
Raceboat netting is way to expensive.

So now its going to be a more standard fishing net.

Maybe some of you have a background in the fishing industry?

Does anyone know which type of common netting material lasts best in sunlight?
Do you coat it with something?

Would prefer black as color.

I definitely want a net and not a mesh cloth.

I'm on a budget and not in the just buy whatever it costs fraction.

I am located in the Netherlands and Germany.

On our first CAT we bought cargo netting. Got some from a military surplus store. I don't think that I would want to try and walk on fishing net. The cargo net lasted for over 5 years.

I get what you're saying about cost. As the last time I looked up Spectra netting, it was going for about $10/sqft.

As far as alternatives, I've only thought it through, having long since sold my Searunner. But I'd avoid anything made of polyproplyne, the same material which is in waterskier's tow rope. As it gets along with UV about as well as Vampires.

On coatings, I'd figure that something like Maxi-Jacket, Maxi-Jacket II, or RP 25 would likely be safe to paint onto things. But I'd call their respective maker's first.
Not that any of said mentioned coatings are exactly cheap.

I know that some guys just paint their netting, but what always set me on edge about that, was the possibility of the solvents in the coatings damaging the netting @ the molecular level. AKA chemically weakening the net's fibers.

What about some stitched, webbing netting? Like, say, from someplace which teaches gymnastics, or a parachuting school, etc. And has to replace it pretty frequently for insurance reasons?
Then, once you got it, you could always run the thing through a sewing machine, using UV resistant thread. As well as"painting" it with the best coating that you can come up with.


Might a call/email to Jim Brown, John Marples, or Richard Woods be in order? That, & or a multihull builder's site.

You don't define 'expensive,' but I found these folks to be quite reasonable. I bought the netting in bulk and then cut and fit it to my boat's needs

I hope my net will last another year or two so I can't give first hand recommendations.

The way I aquired netting was to go to a marina that has commercial fishing boats. Fishermen that have damaged nets often totally replace them with new and the old nets with usable areas are thrown away and can be had for free. The size of the netting depends on the type of fishery, bottom draggers use a large mesh while shrimp fishermen use a much smaller mesh. As you might imagine the material is super strong.

I recall seeing tris and cats in the old days using fishing net coated with tar or some such. People I talked to seemed pleased with it.

In 2010 I bought black fishing net with a mesh size of about 5 cm for use as my trampoline from Bridport Nets in the UK

The material for two trampolines cost me GBP 37. It has lasted very well over these past five years but is now showing signs of wear due to UV.

Last year I installed triangular black netting enabling access to the bowsprit which, as Bridport Nets could not supply the same netting, I bought from Kremmin in Oldenburg

Much more expensive but also stronger and UV protected.

For what it may or may not be worth? Check with a chandler that deals with the trawling industry. Most of what I have seen on shrimp trawls is green. It probably spends more time hanging in the sun than in the water.

I have black polyester square mesh, knotless, 22mm. It was about $100 for enough to do both tramps.


Obviously I bought mine in Aus, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't source something similar in Eu.

Hi Fran, I used to commercial seine fish in Alaska so went to the outfit that caters to the fishermen when it was time to replace my nets. I used the heavy test designed for the bottom of the net, each strand has about a 600 pound breaking strength. Since the outfitters also build nets the odd sized scraps were just about free for the most part. Keeping them painted helps them last, I didn't bother on mine as I wanted to change the way they attach, still haven't got around to it and they have lasted 6 years so far. I'd avoid the tar coated nets as it will rub off on sails or clothes when doing the hammock thing.

The nets are black nylon. The strands are about 3/16ths of a inch, about 4.5mm ? There are about 2 inches between strands, you can walk on it in bare feet if you have to but it is a bit uncomfortable.

I have knitted a net. Don't go there unless if you have lots of time on your hands. Maybe for the bragging rights only.
