Re: Fast Cruising Catamarans - How Fast ?

Yesterday, talking to the owner of Drumbeat, an Oram 62C, he told us that days of 240-260 nm were fairly common. Said he hadn't cracked 300 miles in a day yet, best has been around 280.

This is a pretty luxurious, full-time liveaboard boat. Some videos:

Re: Fast Cruising Catamarans - How Fast ?

St Helena Cup yesterday in Brisbane - 75 or so monos, 21 Multis, about a 20 mile course multis started 30 mins behind monos, first boat home was a multi. Neither of the first boats was a cruising boat thats for sure, and I think the first mono was about 20 times more expensive. It was a Martens 49 - carbon construction draws over 10feet. The first multi was a boat called turning point that sold for about $40k last time it changed hands. There were some cruising boats in each fleet - I'll have a look at the full results later.

Full on race boat.?? From martens web page...... "It is designed to be a superb family cruising yacht, a top performer at regattas and be a fast and comfortable passage maker for distance cruising."

Check out the martens 49 web page.

Here is some interior pictures. Can you actually fit inside that cat.

I can fit it inside a cat that costs half as much as the Marten and goes quicker. No problemo.

Turning point wasn't the only boat to be quicker than the Marten. In fact better than half the fleet of multis were including really good value cruising boats like Rythmic (whitehaven pescott) Renaissance (schionning)

Outremer. Particularly the older models. The new 49 is heavier but still light compared to most. It still may be the fastest in it's category but I can't say for sure. Here's the specs for the 55 Light. http://www.catamaran-outremer.com/en...mer-55-light#4

Re: Fast Cruising Catamarans - How Fast ?

What do you consider a factory cat? One of the well known mass produced boats or something built in a shipyard and not a back yard. I think there are quite a few Australian and French boats that aren't mass produced that would quite likely be faster than any of the mass produced boats.

Re: Fast Cruising Catamarans - How Fast ?

The video says it all. I got the boat up to 17 and change several times. Lots of times in the teens. Now I'm building a 47' Wharram in glass that should be pretty fast. I like to go fast!!!!! We are in the Saint Lucie River and could not bear off any more because of shallow water or we would have gone faster.
