Some Lagoons were French built and some TPI. I would want to know before buying. Personally I probably wouldn't want to deal with daggerboards for a cruising boat, but if you are the type that likes to tweek things as you move maybe you would.

I like the performance of a boat as being my number one criteria. So after crunching the Bruce numbers I lean that way. If u want a floating condo then we are talking a different situation. I was surprised u didn't mention Outremers also ! Any particular reason why not? How about Chris White Atlantic Cats? So many boats...so little money! smile.

The Atlantic cats are out of my price range and the Outremer is a bit too small for full time living with a family of 4. Don't they say 90% at anchor. I do like the Outremers for the sailing, but add cost and living in and they fall down the list a bit.

I could be wrong but I thought the 37 and 42 were TPI and the larger ones JTA. for the 90' time frame.

There were 37's and 47's built by Tillot Pearson (hence TPI) in Rhode Island, USA. There was also a 42 (briefly). Production was moved to France with the new design 47 having the vertical windows. The 37 morphed into the vertical windowed 38.
No TPI Lagoon was ever built in France.....and could not be when TPI refers to a specific Rhode Island builder with a reputation for quality.
Some people say the TPI Lagoons were the best built Lagoons.
To my eyes, the TPI's are the prettiest Lagoons and still look the most modern (my opinion).

Outremers and Atlantics, do not have the accommodation and the living ergonomics, like you said, 90% at anchor (with other cruisers... sundowners .... pot lucks, dinners.....)

The price range is quite different for the three so leave price out.

This is what we used to call the "RAW" factor - what you saw as you took the oars to row away from your cat at anchor. Everyone now looks the other way with outboards.

I have a rule applied since 1966 - nothing in the spec for the structure that can rot. Very satisfying - I can tell all the owners or potential buyers of older Kelsall's, structural survey will almost certainly be good for more decades.

The outboard helms on my boat are the most popular seats on board - both are usually occupied unless it's really snotty, then only the leeward one is.

Sorry Dave, but shirtless, bald head and no hat, sitting in the sun all day is the antithesis of our sailing strategy - which involves as much shade as possible. We avoid sun as much as possible, wear shirts, use liberal sunblock, and we still end up deeply tanned and sometimes burned in the tropics.
