yes, you can make passages on a small cat. but if you run into the worst weather for whatever reason, i would rather be in a mono.
35' breaking seas, 50kt winds, a mono can roll, and right itself. a cat will not.
short of a 30' beam cat, or a very experienced captain, they can be dangerous.

scoobert...... Really??????

35' breaking seas are my favourite offshore conditions,.... the boat really zips around and is a blast to play in....

Yup!
If i was going to stay coastal or docked, a cat would be my first choice.
But in the tasman sea, i want my mono.

Re: Do Catamarans Have a Better Resale Value?

I do not think they do.

I think it is more about what the boat is and how she was maintained rather than how many hulls she has.

Quality, well maintained, low priced boats sell in no time. Hull or no hull.

Part of the lucky and fast sale might have been 'the right type of boat' to resell quickly, it was a 40ft french steel centreboard, apparently there is a good market for these.
  • what in your opinion is a good boat that sails and sells well?
  • do multihulls in your opinion generally sell better/faster? (In my pricerange it would be e.g. a Prout Snowgoose 37 or Gemini and I like the idea of switching to a catamaran, we are a family with two children, they will be 6 and 7 at the time of our planed trip)...
Thanks a lot!
Welcome to the hazing ritual Vindaloo. This is the most abusive group I've ever known for first-timers! They'll get over it in time.

I think that catamarans have recently had better resale value because of rapidly increasing popularity. In the past, fewer catamarans were sold than today, and therefore there are fewer older models available compared to newer models.

Signs are that catamarans will continue to increase in popularity. However, it should also be noted that new Catamaran prices are also somewhat higher than monohull designs due to the same supply/demand effects, so in the end it might be a wash - you pay a premium to buy a Catamaran today, and make part of it back later when you sell it as a used model into a tight market.

I think the effects of this demand curve will vary over time, and I think there is some truth in the saying "if you have to ask, you can't afford it". You should be prepared for a very, very expensive hobby/lifestyle no matter what kind of catamaran you choose.

The key to the trade up ladder is wisdom and patience, and the willingness to exploit an opportunity to buy well, then to sell better, and a free place to keep the boat until the sale is complete.

440 is a "Small Cat" now? Did this group become that elitist while I was away? What happened to the "I used to live with my family of 5 in an 18' pocket sailor" crowd?

Re: Do Catamarans Have a Better Resale Value?

FWIW,

Is it not true that if you are starting out buying a used boat, a "better resale value" will mean that you will pay more in the first place?

Can't see where there is a difference between monos and multis in this respect. Depreciation from purchase to sale will depend a great deal on how long you keep the boat and how you maintain and improve her during that time, and not so much on the nuimber of hulls, construction material or number of masts.

Cheers,

Jim

I think you missed the whole point of the "scoobert" exchange and not sure where the "elitist" label applies and there seems to be only one person that feels a L440 is "small" and dangerous for offshore work. (or any Cat with less than a 30' beam for that matter)

Ooh, you're right - only a 25' beam (which is about 28' in catamaran measurements) - best get that death trap off the water now before a tragedy occurs.

Yes, there was no doubt that in the Queens Birthday storm that all the people on Monos and there boats all survived in in the Tasman.

Oh wait - sorry - I mean the exact opposite. And the 98 Hobart that proved the absolute invincibility of monos, old and new, - whoops again sorry I mean the exact opposite.

Mate I dont care what you sail, I just ask that you dont make up lies and tell me that what I sail is a death trap, when that is demonstrably untrue. Most of us are well and truly over the scare campaign run by some people,

Re: Do Catamarans Have a Better Resale Value?

Yes, off course! The kayak that did not make it was mono too!

I think the whole mono / cat nonsense is 99% a money thing. Why can't so many owners face it?

Re: Do Catamarans Have a Better Resale Value?

Wow. At 34 foot long and 14 feet wide, Yes, it is a Catamaran, A very small one,

But it came down the Tasman with no problems, And it will be going back up the Tasman again when its repaired, And it will also sail thru Bass straight on the way up to the Tasman,

As for resale, I will tell you when I eventually sell it. In about 2 years time,

There is a lot of stuff on a cruising Cat or Mono That isnt on a local boat that doesnt travel,

Total cruising Package will cost about 30 Grand, Electronics, Autopilot, Watermaker, Etc, Irrespective of boat its on,

Then its the cost of the boat, Multi's are usually at least twice the price of a Mono,

But cruising in a Multi, I like the floor that stays level in all weathers and seas.
I can put my coffee down and it will stay where I put it, Not over the side, Hahahahaha

And not once in my 3000 mile journey did I feel unsafe in my 34 foot Gemini, 105MC,
