DHS "Certificate"?

Hello all, we may be heading to the Bahamas/further in the next couple of months and have our passports, documentation, etc. all ready for customs - have mentioned our intentions to several fellow cruisers who told us to make sure we have our Department of Homeland Security "clearance" or "certificate" before we go to facilitate easy in/out. I'm totally ignorant on this, so is there a thread somewhere on the Forum that describes this paperwork that you can point me to? Or a site that has the requirements/forms?

Thanks!

Pat

You need the decal with a number to clear in. You can find info here

Oh, and remember to get one for 2017, not 2016 (unless you are coming back to the US before the end of the year)

Would a vessel under 30' length need a DHS certificate? The site shows 30+ but I saw no mention of shorter than that.

Re: DHS "Certificate"?

You need to register for the Small Vessel Reporting System. You can go online at:

https://svrs.cbp.dhs.gov/Default.aspx

Each person on your boat needs to register online. You don't need to have a boat tto register; but each person listed on the USCG documentation should list it on their application.

It will ask for your USCG documentation # of your vessel (if you have one) and your passport #.

Then you will be asked to attend an interview at the closest CBP office near you. You have to bring the documents with you. IT should take 15 minutes per person. They will take fingerprints and photos.

The officer will do a basic background check, and as long as you don't have anything major in your history (major arrests, jail time, etc) then you'll get approved.

As a result of participating in the program, you can check out and check in from the U.S. via phone. You don't have to clear in back in the U.S. when you come back in from the Bahamas or wherever you're coming back from.

Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Octopussy

Not required for vessels under 30 feet.
