Mai Tai (Colin Wilesmith) - Google Search

There can't have been that many Shockwave 36's built. I understand this one had just undergone a big refit with the addition of a central chicken coop arrangement. Theres another 36 located in Carnarvon with a solid bridge deck added. Do you Know the origins of Mai Tai. Was it Pumkin eater by any chance?

Nope, no idea

Initially I had it in my head that it was a re-named Taeping (Grainger)

If it was Pumpkin eater it was built very light and had a pretty hard life from what I have been told.

Mai Tai and Pumpkin Eater are two different boats. Last time I saw it (12 -17 years ago) Pumpkin Eater was called Growler and based in Botany Bay. Lach Percy owned her. She was very soft and only lightly built. I knew one of her builders (Peter Garden) and he used 10oz cloth as the laminate.

Mai Tai was based nearby for a while. She was moored in Kogarah Bay and for a while was called Miranda Hi fi. She had beam problems back in the 80s and cracked the rear one when pushing hard against Bullfrog.

Both cats were sisterships - Shockwave 37s. They would be getting very old now - as they were lightly built they must be getting close, or past, their fatigue life. I ran into Growler (Long story but they were on port) in a very light breeze. Rather than whack them with a fast moving Twiggy float bow I slowed down and touched with my main hull bow. No bank, crash or crack, just the gentle sound of a thin laminate bending out of the way - left a crease but no break in the laminate - very very thin. I would not like to be out in one of the these old boats in a blow offshore.

I got told 400gsm on 10 mm foam ( 400 g = 14.1095 oz)

Still very light

If you think that that these laminates were woven cloths (not biaxial or double bia stitched laminates) and that the resin was poly it makes the weight of the laminate even more amazing. I could have the weight a bit wrong - 400gm may be right but I do know it was cloth that was used.
