Container shipping cost vs marina cost

Just wonder whats more cost effective - shipping 40" box or keeping 40" boat in marina, awaiting next stage??

Any excel formula?

This may be the winner of the most cryptic first post...

DHL should be able to provide shipping rates on a 40" box, but I think they need the other 2 dimensions, weight, and destination...

Slip fees in the us vary, but $10/ft seems average... for 40", they may allow a 4" overhang in a 3' slip... So $30/mo???

Looks like Happy nailed it. But also, box contents can affect shipping rates - for example shipping hazardous material often costs more.

40 inches can be hauled in most mid-size cars

As mentioned more information is needed- what sort of boat, where is it at and where is it going? Can the mast fit in the container too? When it gets to destination, is it going into the water right away? Will it need protection from the elements?

I suspect the PO meant a 40 foot container?

In that case very few 40' boats will fit in a 40' container

You would also need to take time into account. Are we talking a few months in a slip or years?

A boat in a slip is still in need of significant maintenance,

Shipping container is one shot, but what you going to do with it once it gets to wherever you ship it?

If you have no plans to sail it while waiting, you could also think about breaking it down and storing it on the hard. Perhaps a fenced storage yard with security, or possibly at your marina. (Ours has both slips and hard storage available, hard is much cheaper.)

You cannot simply slide a boat into a container. You must secure it to a cradle. The cradle must be secured to the container to the point it is a single unit. No offense intended.

As someone mentioned, very few 40 foot boats will fit in a 40 foot container. Containers are 8' wide and most boats over about 25-30' are going to be wider than 8'.

There was a company building a long, narrow boat just to fit in a 40' container but the design was a bit odd.

Even a tri that you can disassemble would probably take more than one container to hold the main hull and both amas unless they were very small.
