The Horstman 36
Double diagonal teak really ?
You think ?
Teak is a bitch to glue, but, it can be done, would have used a tanker of acetone !

Wow! Is it just me or is that a hell of a deal? Even factoring in new standing / running rigging, paint, engine work, etc, that’s a big ol’ boat for not a lot of money!

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Yeah, it's a good deal alright. It was listed at US$26,500 on yachtworld.com, so presumably the vendor is taking a US$12K hit on that.
My guess is he's a bit desperate, so would probably take a bigger hit if someone rocked up and offered him cash on the spot.
It's still a project.
Neeeds LOTS of TLC. But nothing serious that would be tricky for a competant DIY-er, except perhaps the cracked mast base, which might require some ingenuity to pull the stick where it is in order to replace it.
But 3 x hulls x 43-ft is a lotta paintin' and scrapin' and sandin'.....
Migh be worth doing enough to get it sailing and take it south to a cheaper labor market to get the boring stuff done. Maybe just do the antifoul and get the motor running. If the rig's OK, you could probably just go.
If the rig needs doing (and one chainplate certainly needs inspection/removal) then do that as well. Not worth compromising that stuff.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

^ you won’t find too much in the way of a cheaper multihull capable boat yard. Even if the yard it’s self or labor is somewhat cheaper- you then have parts availability/cost/delays issues to deal with.

Probably not. Marine grade fiir or “mahogany” plywood would have most likely been used, possibly cedar. It’s easy for someone who doesn’t know a lot about boats to confuse teak & “mahogany” or “teak trim” with “made of teak”

How do you know that one chainplate is bad?

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

This maybe a bit off topic but I would like some advise on buying a used Jim Brown searunner 31, the bottom of the wing deck is cracked on both sides. Is this from stress or old age?
Capt Billy.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Most likely from stress. While sitting on the hard. Everything on that boat is easily fixed with biaxial 18/8 fiberglass and epoxy. Once you go out sailing without all that lead you will never go back. Good luck

-Get the book, "the case for the cruising trimaran", and also "searunner construction manual" which I believe can be downloaded from outrigmedia.com -Might as well listen to some (Jim Brown) podcasts etc while you're there...

-If it's polyester (resin as opposed to epoxy) and in "project" condition or has been neglected at all, walk away. If it's epoxy (and glass over ply), see previous reply by guthrie101.

-Find the searunner owner's thread on this "multihull sailboats" forum, many hours of good relevant reading there.

-Pay close attention to the centerboard trunk and/or mini keel for damage or water intrusion

Same 31 Piver $600 I would guess...if anyone wants to see photos there are some on a recent ebay auction. not sure if boat is still available or not but it might be based on date on the latitude 38 ad.

The (on eBay mentioned) included tohatsu 18hp 2-stroke is the main selling point that I see, but who knows..for the right person. That was the best power to weight outboard in this size range ,87ish lbs.
