It probably is a good deal when you consider that it takes about 270 sheets of ply to make that boat with the double diagonal planking and wing deck.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Assuming this boat is in reasonable shape, do you folks think it's a reasonable design? It sounds like it performs OK. I really prefer a Cat and I like the idea of limited rigging. It seems this could provide a decent, low-cost platform for a very functional boat.

Thanks!

I've wondered about the story behind this conversion, does anyone know what happened that caused someone to hacksaw off a large part of an expensive boat?

This is a Nicol Cavalier. It looks like the one that used to be in the marina at Maple Bay which was very nice and well equipped. They sail well, the Cavalier is a bit slower than our Vagabond MK2 because of the wider hulls but can carry more load. The tend to sail like a Cross, more performance than some. A lot of boat for the money, we love ours.

All that dark paint must turn the boat into an oven! What were they thinking?

Here's one in the UK that looks very interesting:
Foundry Reach :: Vessel Details

Too far away for me and I'm not sure it's made for ocean crossing. Pretty low deck clearance in the back.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Speaking of bargain-priced project boats, my son just bought a 12-meter Sunstream cat in Norfolk, VA. He said the boat itself is in decent condition, but both sail drives are inop, one with the head pulled. We are brainstorming how to get it down to Vero Beach, FL. The leading option is to lash the 11' RIB with a 20hp 4-stroke between the hulls astern and motor her out of the marina and into open water, then (hopefully) sail her around the Outer Banks. Anyone have any experience with such a jury rig?
