Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

For twice the price you could get this boat:
Trimaran 1979 Cross Trimaran Trimaran For Sale

For the price, it looks like a very nice boat. The interior needs to be redone, and it probably could use some more electronics and solar/wind power generation for my tastes. I would like to have some nets between the hulls too, but it would have real potential to my untrained eye.

Re: keep them coming

I could not reach the owner on the $8K cat in TX (anyone get a better phone #?) but did talk at length with the cat hulls in NC just not a good fit for us at this time. Keep the leads coming and maybe the right one will come along for us.

this seems to have potential.
Used Nichol Hedley Custom Catamaran for Sale | Yachts For Sale | Yachthub

clearly some internal work to do, but it could be a fun weekender, its got me checking ebay to work out how much you could fit it out for...

You would be hard pressed to build a floating 49' tri for $500.

I'm sure it is in horrible condition if they are selling it that cheap, but still would be a good starting point compared to building a boat from scratch. Would it be possible to add a new thin exterior fiberglass layer and a new coat of white paint if it is wood? Change out some windows, put in all new single color vinyl (or whatever that fabric is)?

Sails might be expensive, and it looks like a sailboat layout instead of the modern tri that uses all of the space and has a big interior.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Almost all of the old tris were homebuilts and made out of ply. Ply has a nasty habit of rotting if not cared for. Sometimes the hulls and/or topsides were not entirely glassed but just coated with whatever resin was used which leads to soft spots and more rot. If you just had to replace some ply and rot hadn't got to the stringers and this boat was not to far gone it might be worth it. You will likely be buying a new rig, engine, and lots more. Like $50K to $100k more. Used stuff would be cheaper. It looks like a Piver so check those threads.

Here's a Harris 38 with a starting bid of 1 buck but he says it's appraised at $65K. Epoxy and (maybe) no wood. Looks really nice and fast. This is a good boat and ya gotta pay more.

Fellow CFers I need your help help identifying this trimaran I bought her and can't figure out which Piver Model she is.

I'm thinking she is a Encore or Quest. She is approximately 28'*17', slooped rigged. Her main Hull and one ama are bone dry, port ama has a very small leak. Her rigging is beefed up. Overall she is structurally sound.

Not sure if I want to keep her or sell her as I did find a cross I'm interested in.

I promise I did not paint her this green.

Love to find out exactly what she is and if anyone knows her history. She was built in 1985 brought down from Long Beach to San Diego.

Hope someone can help.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Edited to say that this boat has apparently been rescued/purchased by the guy I met during my visit.

FYI the tri on page 3, post #31 is still for sale, now $5000, I think you could get it for much less as the anchorage is being cleared next month by a state agency and the owner is 3000 miles away. I looked it over last week. The picture is years old. It has lichen growing all over the deck and thick barnacles on the bottom. Rigging looks ok probably because it appears rarely if ever sailed and is constantly washed by our rains. There were some sail bags aboard. The designer is still around in Vancouver, my guess is 90s, Google Robert Harris. It is in Port Townsend and 2 protected miles from the largest travel lift north of San Francisco and is a good DIY yard so you could tow it over there & dig into it. Motor is out of it and marginal. The interior is camping and needs to be completely done but surprisingly not musty or moldy. The hulls & deck probably need to be sanded down completely and recoated. Main bilge is dry, some fresh water in the amas, I saw leaking hatches. Impossible to tell if there is any water in the core w/o a haul out. Some dagger board case work needs to be completed. A cursory stomp around found no soft spots on the deck. Its probably is foam core & maybe balsa on the deck, it is not a plywood boat. My inexperienced eye thought the glass work looked pretty good. It has detachable amas (with one connection starting come apart .... looks like a bolt just let go) so if you could pry everything apart it could be shipped. I like the lines of it quite well, it would pass the wife test if prettied up so.....If I were younger with more time than sense I'd jump on it. I have no interest but would hate to see it go to the landfill. For contact info try Craigslist, Washington state, Olympic, (Olympic Penninsula is 50 miles from Seattle and is where Port Townsend is). If you get it shoot me a private message as it would be interesting to follow your progress.

Nemo55, Sorry to hear about your unfortunate luck with the border. Purely from a tirekicker standpoint, what work would need to be done to make the 31' seaworthy? - not intended as a 'how long is a piece of string' remark
