We decided to pass on Invictus. It would be too expensive to upgrade/convert it to meet our purposes. Having said that:
1. The ad on Craigslist is misleading. There is no significant damage to any of the hulls.
2. Invictus could be put in the
water and sailed in short order.
Invictus was built as a
racing boat, and it was very successful in the 70s and 80s. It was also built very lightly. There is essentially no
interior. It has used an 8hp
outboard for
power. The top of the daggerboard trunk is in the middle of the
cabin. When we raced it, water would shoot up the trunk and start to flood the cabin!! That made for some exciting moments.
We found very few wet spots and practically no
rot, certainly none that would pose any problem for
repair. There are a lot of
sails, most of them old. Larry added 11' to the top of the original
mast to help sailing in the calms of a
Puget Sound summer. We would go back to the original size for
offshore work. The running
rigging could stand a good run through the
washing machine. All of the
hardware should be pulled and rebedded. The bases for the
genoa tracks are soft - by far the worst of the soft
wood. The H rubber on the windows needs to be resealed or replaced. There are a few corners and edges where the
fiberglass needs to be touched up.
I understand that Invictus was sailed in 2013, not that long ago. There is a man on site that knows Invictus very well and might be persuaded to help tidy her up.
IMO, a guy could pay a bit for Invictus and still come out ahead if his expectations for
interior finish were not high. There is a hell of a lot of boat there.
