Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

I would do some research on Carbon Fiber for a hull.
I don't think it is particularly good for this purpose, for a cruising boat.
I think you need some Kevlar in addition to give it the needed toughness,
which might make free CF look expensive.

Might also make sure it is in fact Carbon Fiber, Basalt cloth looks like CF, but is not CF.

Basalt:

Hope that helps. Building a 35ft cat from scratch can take years to complete, I may just go down this road also.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

NO !
Sorry nimblemotors disagree !
Kevlar is very hydroscopic and will wick up loads of water if exposed, further if it needs repairing it will fluff up when abraded like a steel wool pad ! There is a way to sand it flat, wet sand it, oops. Not a material for cruising boats imho.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Sand Crab, I thought Kelsall's KSS process was infused panels? Similar to Rob Denney and his Proa's.
Building with CF would be a very similar process, except the panels are already manufactured and are MUCH stronger than infused panels. That is why I am waiting for Derek to return from his trip to Oz, so I can consult with him on using his plans to build with CF.
Have you ever tried to cut a hole with a hole saw in a CF panel? I have, and it took the teeth off the hole saw and barely made a dent in the panel!
CF is amazing stuff and there's no reason why you can't use it pretty much like plywood. You won't have to find void-less plywood, coat it with epoxy and cover it with fiberglass. It's already done, and with a much stronger result that will never absorb water and rot.
That seems to me to be some big advantages.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

You are right about the KSS infusion. I hadn't followed up on the details because about 10 years ago it was a hand laid vacuum table setup. The unique thing about his build is that you do most of the major components on a flat surface and then bend them to make the shape and I could see where infusion is simpler there. A gentleman on Boatdesign was building a good size cat and was having some issues with infusion and once it's screwed up it can ruin your day (year) in a hurry.
So do you have flat panels of CF or rolls like traditional FG?

I have seen spars(test) that had a tiny scratch in them ,and then subjected to water, within two days the spar was water logged..I remember ,back in the day, that if you had one of the early Cannondale type road bikes and it fell over and got a very small dent in the frame or scratch that it was rendered useless ...I wouldnt use kevlar, pbi nomex,or anything similar to build a boat that I would sail in for leasure..however, I have wrapped carbon fiber around thin walled aluiminum tubing(6061t6,7071, at .64 wall thickness and .58(?) and had good results in load testing, still if it gets a crack in the fiber, delam!

The materials include a combination of the two.

Kinda scary when you realize who it is selling the boat. And when you realize who it is, then you have to ask yourself why so cheap as he knows Shuttleworths better than maybe anyone in the US!
