Multis would be more likely to fit the rig specs; looks like monos would need to be in the 30'-32' range to get the proper mast and boom sections, and I'd then need to shorten the mast. But lead mines have a bunch of advantages ... plenty to find pretty cheap, and salvaging that ballast sure helps the budget. Winches would likely be oversized for my need but is that so bad? Suggestions welcomed ... specific boat referrals not needed yet at this strategizing point of the process.
What's your budget?

My two cents is to save your time, energy and MONEY and buy that used Farrier instead.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Yes I saw that Farrier for that great price and it should be tempting to someone ... if the low price doesn't make everyone overly suspicious. It does not click a number of my checklist boxes. I am going center cockpit to get separate cabins for me and the mate ... early bird and night owl. I want horizontal folding to be able to fold and motor most easily. And keeping the folded beam road legal at 8'6". To those goals I already have John Marples' DC-3 plans in hand. He does a great job of keeping his designs budgetable.

I look at a boat like this ...
32 foot Irwin sailboat
... and I see $1250 of lead and $1000 of engine to sell, and I get spars, electronics, winches, ports, whatever for my labor and minimal moving expense. But I need an idea of bow problematic it is to reuse spars which are the main motivation.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

PS when a Dragonfly or Tristar come up in good condition for $20K I'll change my build plan. A bargain boat is no bargain if it won't do what you need it to do.

There was a smaller Dragonfly for sale up in the Pacific Northwest for a while at a pretty low price. Perhaps it's still available? Are you referring to a Horstman Tristar? There's a radical difference between a nice performer like a Dragonfly to a roomeran Tristar. How come?

There is a guy in Las Vegas that's been flipping Telstars and other multi's for years. Do a nationwide search on Craiglist for "telstar" and he might have one.

I mispoke when I said "Las Vegas" in my previous comment because I'm pretty sure that's the same guy that's been flipping multi's for years.

Where's the link, dude?

It (DF 800 fixed wing/demountable)had delam issues as I checked into it, and when the owner/seller realized I was about to buy it and have it shipped cross country, he came clean about the 'issues' it had. I appreciated his honesty because the delam issues were not apparent to the eye, but he knew about them. To his credit he undertook the repairs himself I believe, and was selling to move up to a larger boat for his family.

And look you even get two crossbeams that double as ladders. Allows you to climb out of the hole you put your dignity in.
