I'm a cat owner, and I love it's rock solid stabilty. First time I had it in 55+kn wind I was amazed (not blown away thankfully) by how comfortable it was.

Curious to know how this happened. They seem to have piled up on each other. It looks like a lot were on swinging moorings.

It doesn't really matter what type of boat it is. It's just plain sad, sad, sad...

It seems at least a few boats were literally driven under others (and some are at rest with other boats on top). That bulldozer action could conceivably cause a flip.

Wow, thank-you for directing me to that pix.. I count maybe 5 outa about 30. I am impressed at how many cats did not flip in a CAT 5 Hurricane storm surge. Now someone show a pix of all the upsidedown monohulls, oh wait, their under water.

There are a grand total of 8 cats upside down in this picture amid dozens that aren't . Now I own monos now but I have owned tri's and if you notice most of the cats are clocked similar except the ones that are flipped they seem to be 90° out of the clocking (approx)

The only reason the cats are "flipping" is because the 185mph wind got up under them and launched them. It had nothing to do with their stability or rig design.

Most people don't go out sailing in 185mph winds, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

While I agree the concern about cats flipping is often overstated, a single photo, mostly of charter cats in harbor most certainly shouldn't be taken to represent the risk of catamarans capsizing while under way.

Also, as with monohulls, not all cats are the same. I'm sure a harbor full of Iroquois would have very different results.

Agreed... I don't think that drawing conclusions about the seaworthiness of cats vs monos is reasonable or appropriate in this scenario.

While everyone is busy looking at the photos of those destroyed cats, keep in mind those are dreams piled up there. That mass of Moorings boats represent hard earned money put toward a future (not an investment), and now represent months of fighting with the insurance companies.

We should not use the photos, stories, or drama for entertainment.
