We only have a monohull but when we built it we decided to go for a Volvo Penta rather than the yanmar in the 1st two boats. 18 years on and it still runs like a dream, economical too. Very happy with it.

Yanmar now makes the 4jh4e LOW RPM 56HP engine. Perfect for a 50' cat as I have them in my Voyage500.

i have gm30 yanmar 3 cylinder simple and easy to fix/service also found all over the world i use the local car parts factors for spares no need to pay top marine prices.
as to the customer servise we did not buy new but the local agent had sold the boat first time and when we neded parts he was verry helpfull also have been to factory in france had the factory tour and given contact number so can now go direct very helpfull.

The Privilege factory are very helpful but anything you order from them seems to cost about 3 times the price you can get it elsewhere. Be careful.

I re powered my Privilege with Yanmars. I selected the Yanmars because of the wide availability of part, reliability and services. I have not been disappointed on any of these points. I had one issue with the size (number) of the heat exchanger coils. They sent a technician out, he replaced them free of charge. Wonderful!

I am looking at a Lightwave 45 in a couple of years. Fully specced out under 1m ozzie $$. (basic sail away is around A$750k) These are well made, very nice inside and one recently won the multihull division of the ARC. What sort of $$ are you lookng at for similar sized priviledge or catana?

I am not familiar with Privilege, but I've seen couple of Catana's that came to us for servicing. They are excellent boats and they should perform significantly better than Privilege's.
Two points though; helm station is extremely exposed to wheather. Personally I wouldn't like to be there in the offshore in rough conditions and singlehanded. Secondly, plumbing, cabling, electronics are extremely complicated. If something goes wrong, it isn't stupid proof like Lagoons or FP's and there is no easy fix..I believe that's something worth considering.

?? The plumbing, cabling, and electronics on our Privilege 39 are dead simple. In what ways do you think it's complex?

Same here. One of the things I liked about the Privilege 39 was the excellent wiring (still good 14 years later) and the straightforward and easy plumbing. Best quality throughout.

The attention to detail in every system convinced me that this would be a good offshore cat for a circumnavigation straight from the factory without a lot of necessary uprades to get ready for the trip. When the boat left the factory, we could have loaded our gear on board and started the circumnavigation.

Catana used to make light and fast boats, but this was before Poncin era. Lightship weight for Privilege 495 is 11300 kg, and 18300 kg for the Catana 50. So I would rather compare the Catana 50 to a caravan rather than a BMW... No surprise two 75hp engines are installed, and they are likely to work quite often. Apart from that, finishes and comfort are outstanding.

Hi Malikalalu,

I've had the opportunity to crew aboard several Catanas and a Privilege. As with all my catamaran experiences, I loved sailing both boats. I was not happy with the exposed helm on the Catana but I was more annoyed at doing engine checks under the bed on the Privilege. The best single handed boat I've crewed on to date was a trip I made aboard a PDQ/Antares 44 - we were in a squall for 48 hours and the boat was rock solid. Since your question wasn't about this boat I won't go on about everything other than to say you should seriously concider this option.
