Re: catamarans manufacturing process(es) info

This is an awesome wealth of information, what I am wondering from a byers point of view with a fixed price in mind is it better to look at newer "low quality" boats or older "high quality" boats? Obviously an older boat that has lacked the proper maintenance is going to be a money pit regardless, however for 225K it seems you can get a mid 90s (catana, outermar) or a late 00's (Lagoon, FP). it seems that the designee trends are heading towards boats that sacrifice performance for accommodations, on the other hand a newer boat should have the advantage of advancement in martials and is younger. thoughts?

My vote is older known high quality boats. Catana 43, 47, 52 made from 1999-2004 ish are ledgendary. Outremer as well but a little tighter on the accommodations.

If I remember correctly Catana may have had some problems with some of their boats during that time as well as going through bankruptcy? Almost 20 years ago but sticks in my memory.

If I'm not mistaken Catana went through a bankruptcy/restructuring in the 2005-6 ish timeframe. Boats before that were solid except for the electrical systems. My guess is that the electrics will have been sorted out on the older boats by now.

I knew of a couple of 401's of that era that had serious delam issues, as well as a 431 I believe. A friend also worked on a new 43 that had some structural issues after delivery. I'm sure the boats were taken care of and are in good shape now.
