Catamarans - Current Market Situation

Hi there

Have read this post with great interest as have started the search for a cruising cat myself- either new or near new. Probably not in any great hurry as the AUD remains pretty strong and with the debacle in Europe cant see the global situation changing anytime soon.

The drop in french production cats (and german monos) has sparked my interest after the Sydney boat show and they now appear to be around $AUD 100k cheaper than say a new Seawind these days - Delivered. (EG Lagoon 400 $535k vs seawind 1250 at $635k)

Would love to support the local builder and my better half is sold on their open layout but $100k is alot of extras in anyones language.

Is this the kind of gap that people are seeing between the imports and the Aussie based cats in the second hand market out of interest ie around 25% after delivery costs or is it now a bit narrower?

PS im with you Dragonlady - if I do go french then the FPs look way better performance wise than the lagoons which seem so heavy or am I missing something?

I like the FPs and I have been told they sail better than some of the competition but as I have not sailed on them myself it is only hearsay on my part.

If you are thinking of buying anything new talk to people who done that.
If what people have told me about the problems they have had with new boats is half true I would stick to the second hand market.

I have heard enough new boat delivery stories and will be wary for sure though ive also seen a few older boats with problems missed by survey or cropping up soon after and your on your own then. Another tick for the local builders i guess but not enough to cover the price gap unfortunately.

So what kind of price difference are you seeing roughly between the newish 2nd hand Aussie based cats vs importing an equivalent one (after costs of course)? ie is it around the 20% to 25% im seeing in new boats or a bit less?

Like the new boats - it is in large part about currency movements.

So DL now that yu are sailing on your FP how do you like it?

Did you get a delivery crew to bring her across the Pacific or did she come by ship?

She came across on her own, just had her out in 40 knots in about 3 meter waves no problem.
She even handled one of the crew heating her up on a very big wave!
I nearly had a fit, but the boat just took it in her stride.
I have to say these boats are very impressive, we just did Bowen to Sydney in 9 days with a moderately experienced crew who didn't get anywhere near the most out of her.
Ops sorry this is a cruising forum, we're not supposed to brag about how fast our boat goes.
17kts was the top speed, ops sorry again!

We know you had only lite soda and saltine crackers to eat and left off most all water and diesel and the heavy memory foam matresses and only one anchor - aluminum.

Hello Hightacker,
To be honest, I don't think you have one chance in a million of selling your boat for $800k, regardless of what the market situation is.

My advice is to check out the one-off's listed on Yachtworld, see how long they have been on the market, talk to some brokers, and then, if you really need to sell, price it realistically.

Did I miss what year it is? Also need way more specs on everything= engine hours, displacement, electronics etc. I would put this stuff out front. If it is buried in your websites then the stuff is, well, buried. Also what's new and/or replaced. Good luck anyway. BOB
