Catamaran water leakage into cabin

Hey all,

We have recently purchased a Catalac 8 Meter (wonderful boat),

Upon motoring, we noticed that there is water seeping into the front starboard cabin onto the bed which is below the waterline, there is no obvious place where the water can be coming from which is frustrating. There is small crack in the fiberglass on the inside where the water is leaking in but from examining the hull there is no hole or crack.

Has anyone had this kind of experience with the Catalac or any other boat? Is this a problem with the hull??

Thanks!

tough one! I'd be poking around with a screwdriver and tapping with it's handle trying to find the pathway in. Looking for Rot, spider cracks, etc. The gunnel would get a good inspection also. It only happens when motoring?

Some pictures, inside and out might get a few more suggestions.

You should sand back the area on the outside of the hull. If someone patched a bump or small hole with bondo then painted over it is very possible to have such a leak. If so the repair is to remove the old repair and do it right using epoxy.

Maybe a problem. You may find that the water is actually being trapped within a larger section of hull. As a wooden boat owner I'm always looking for and sometimes wondering "how's that getting in?" Maybe you got one but my favorite tool is the Fein Multimaster (or equivalent). https://feintools-online.com/multima...kaAsdZEALw_wcB. It's oscillating so doesn't make a lot of mess.

My suggestion would be to use the 1 1/4" fine tooth saw blade and begin from the inside slicing into the fiberglass where the leak is then keep following it until you get to the problem. Once you make the initial small cut you should be able to follow the direction for a bit without sinking the boat. The water could be running a long way to where that crack is. The blade is less than 1/8" thick so it won't do a whole lot of damage. Easy to fill once your done chasing the leak. Too bad it's below water line. That's a real pain becasue you may only find the entry when you're in the water but will risk making a bigger problem. You may find that the water is actually being trapped within a larger section of hull or it could be something that you could patch with underwater epoxy at least temporary until you pull it.

Best of luck.

Composite, which is plywood epoxied with fiberglass exterior for the hulls and deck.
