The 'surfs' part actually looked kind of fun; the 'rocks' part, probably not as much.

Re: catamaran surfs into rocks

Bummer. Must have been caught at such an angle the rudders couldn't turn the boat down the wave.

Friends of ours experienced something similar, and were heading for a rock wall. Out of desperation he turned the wheel the other way, steered INTO the wave (which would go against every instinct.).

Amazingly, the boat turned up and over the wave, and apart from some broken crockery, was fine. When he was telling me, I wondered if I would have that presence of mind in that situation. I don't know.

Less than one second into the video I was hollering, "TURN TO STARBOARD !!"

Re: catamaran surfs into rocks

I doubt that the rudder could be effective being probably out of water with midship on the top of the surf. I wonder if keeping the daggerboard down would have been helpful in staying the course

A couple of weeks ago I was kitesurfing a similar looking channel on Guam. Once of the coming in fishing charters got picked up by a wave did the exact same thing. I was the only kiter in the water and saw the whole thing. He got turned 90 degrees on his side and did the right thing by turning into the wave. I was amazed nobody got thrown off the boat but indeed turned up and over the same wave that took him out. He came within a few feet of the rocks though. But he made it out.

Re: catamaran surfs into rocks

after being broadsided wouldn't you would need some forward motion to give the rudders some bite?
Too cautious with the engines?

This is a great lesson to be learned for people not experienced on cats like myself

Note to myself, if it doesn't respond one way try the other!

maybe better write down: deploy small parachute before crossing bar to aid steering.

these bars are really dangerous.

I watched an event similar to the video unfold in Ribadesella which similarly could have been avoided by rounding up. In this case it was a mono running parralel to a seawall below a cliff under under main and jib.

A big puff of wind came out of nowhere causing the boat to broach. The helmsman attempted to fight the boat and drive it down rather than letting it fully round up. As a result the course made good was perpendicular to the wall and SMACK!

No injuries other than pride but the pulpit got destroyed and I imagine there was an extensive gelcoat repair required. Forget hindsight, I knew as it was happening what was going to happen and that he should have just let the boat do what it wanted and not fight it.

If he had instead thrown the tiller over to leeward (which is easy) instead of pulling on it (which is hard) he would have come around head to wind with a back winded jib that would have pushed him off on the other tack, away from danger.

It was sort of painful to watch.

Here is the entrance in the above video. Looks like the skipper in the video followed a course similar to the course of the powerboat in the satellite image, over a reef when he could have been lined up with the channel better and in deeper water.
