A 6.5 tonne object will displace 6.5 cu metres of fresh water ( or 6.25 x 1.025 cu metres of 'salt' water)

If the 6.5 tonne object has a volume greater than 6.5 cu metres it will float... if less it will sink....

Yes, and as I've repeatedly said, the materials to build my boat would occupy at least 12 cu metres. But still there are people here saying it would sink.

Seriously, do you READ posts before replying to them?

Please try reading this really slowly. THE MATERIALS in my boat occupy at least 12 cubic metres. JUST THE MATERIALS. I really don't know how to make it any more clear.

Of course, once it's built into a boat, the volume is MUCH more than 12 cu metres.

Ok dude chill out. It's a reasonable mistake considering 12m3 is QUITE A LOT of material.

He counts air as one of the materials his boat is built from

I don't remember us having any disastrous weather up there recently. Did I miss something?

The Titanic was never described as unsinkable without qualification. There WAS a reference to "practically unsinkable".

She also demonstrated damage tolerance that the cruise ships of today would struggle with.

The Titanic suffered approximately the same length gash in her hull that the Costa Concordia did. The Titanic stayed afloat for approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, certainly long enough to evacuate everyone if she had carried enough lifeboats. The Costa Concordia was half sunk and on the rocks in less than an hour, and hadn't been evacuated for more than 6 hours later.

The real scandal is how far cruise ship design hasn't come, in all this time.

Simple fact is, the Titanic was a superbly designed and engineered ship, that performed brilliantly. With the exception of the lifeboats.

Most overturned cats will trap some air in the bilges but if you entirely flooded most production cats, I bet most will sink.
I will take some of that action, on a couple of brands at least

To put it another way. Don't make 44Cs materials into a boat, just grab the material that displaces 12 cubic metres and weighs less than a third of that and throw it all on the water. Now explain to me how any of that can sink? Then add some weight on top of it for items like the mast and engines etc, in fact just lay the "heavy" bits on top of the 12 cubic metres, these heavy bits weigh less than two tonne. Now explain to me how it would all sink.

To put it yet another way If a surfboard displaces more than it and and the rider weighs, then it floats. If you cut it into twenty bits, it still floats.

It cannot sink, it's a multihull thread.

44C cat CAN SINK.
Just put it in the Salton Sea, there it will float 200 feet below sea level.

Re: Catamaran Sinking

What does it matter whether any one particular cat will sink or float? Really, there are more dangerous things to worry about then if the cat is on the bottom or partially submerged. This tread started about an escape hatch failing and filling a boat in minutes. Whether it sank or not isn't the point, the boat was lost. Alpha was lost, One World was lost, etc. It's been a pretty tough year on cats. But, as many threads have shown, it's been just as tough for mono's.

I was reading a thread about the new Chris White foiling cat that lost it's front foil. After watching a few videos of the boat on youtube, this video was suggested. Do we all remember it? The boat didn't sink. It didn't even sink when it was totally torn to shreds on a reef a few weeks later. But in the end the boat was lost.

The focus should be on what we can do to prevent particular catastrophic failures or how to deal with them if they occur. It's the same for mono's. It would be nice if the regular cast of characters didn't always jump in on the first or second post to point out the unsinkable falsity. And likewise, we cat owners need to quit claiming that they don't, or most don't. Most do, after such an event, sooner or later find their way to the bottom.
