Catamaran - Share / Fractional Ownership / Charter ?

we are looking to buy a cat next year (40' range) then spend half the year living aboard (somewhere) and the other half of the year on land (Baja). As we will only be using the boat for half the year (during the low season) we are trying to figure out what to do with it the rest of the year (high season).

Choices would include leave it on the hard (not such a good idea), put it in charter (as we plan on buying a used boat not sure if this is entirely feasible), fractional ownership (not sure if this will work) or dual ownership / partnership with another couple who would like a boat for half the year in the high season.

Does anyone have any thoughts or other ideas?

Use it all year and put the house out to lease instead!

Yes, that's an idea, but then would also have to put the husband out to lease as winter in Baja is prime kite-boarding season!

Baja, Mexico? Which months are you not using the cat? Any plans on which cat to purchase?

Sounds Very Interesting

I too have been considering exactly the same interests. However, my wife is not there yet.

Please email me with more detail information about yourself and your ideas .

I have been looking at the Lagoon 410, owners version.

Great. My wife is not there either ;-) but she is definitely interested in sailing cats. I am not in a hurry, and I Think it will tale some tome to find enough like minded people, but now we're two. I am not too keen on the lagoons, i find Them heavy and ugly. I am not sure exactly what i would prefer, buy fountaine pajot and leopard are definitely nicer, or perhaps the new maverick 400.

I will contact you, but let's keep this line open too - more cat fish may bite ;-)

You can find details about me if you click my name. Please update your profile too.

I have written a few posts about what I think and what I am looking for:

Family of Four Getting Ready to Go

Your messages make me think that perhaps a widget can be made for this forum where people can fill in their interests and then matching may be easier.

Have you found what you were looking for?

Hi,
I was also thinking about a fractional/share. I am a former live aboard 4yrs in the carib. Want to do it again but can't full time. Did you find the ownership position you were looking for?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi,

I am new to this forum and specifically joined to find further information on your idea. I am brand new to sailing and I currently do security work overseas but my schedule permits me to be home (wherever that is...carib soon...hopefully) approx 3 to 4 months out of the year. I am interested in seeing the feasibility of owning a 38 - 42 cat using it as a liveaboard for the months I am home and keeping it in a managed charter program the other months. I welcome all guidance, advice, concerns, comments, etc... Thanks! Ryan

We are still investigating the possibility of a Cat share and seeking interested parties. As previously mentioned - we are interested in using the boat during the summer months therefore looking for someone interested in winter month use. Our timeframe is most likely spring '10.

still hanging out here too. No hurry for me as I have stated.

When I have the time my plan was to draft a "business plan" and a set of hard but fair rules (to have something to fall back to in case something does not work out).

The "business plan" would be an estimate of money up front, maintenance, harbors, ..., plan for where the boat would sail/lie for the next X years before an exit (selling the boat).

I might even create a specific match-making site for it, unless I find one in existence first.

Until then, I just hang out, waiting for an opportunity that sounds right for me (my family included).

Cheers,
/\/ikolaj

Hi there,
Its my first post on CF,..but been looking for a long time. Just bought my Cat,.a beautiful 2006 Admiral 38 executive. Its a owners version all pimped out for crusing. I am a avid kiter having lived on Maui and Cabarete many years,..travel to Peru to kite etc. Now going cruising for a year in the Caribbean to kite,, SUP, Snuba and play. I was not interested in a share,..but it opens possibilities with someone into the same thing. This winter I will cruise the Virgin Islands with emphasis on Anegada and St. Croix. But next winter I have to be back in Utah in Big Cottonwood Canyon to rearrange 50 feet of powder with my snowboard.
Let me know how your plans are coming and take a look at the Admiral it beats any Leopard hands down has a huge salon and galley and way better than any french Cat in that price range.
