Catamaran hits uncharted reef NW Australia

In case you have not seen these clips. Pretty scary stuff, I hope they manage to save the boat. A testament to the boat that it has remained floating albeit stern down with so much water onboard.

Here are a couple of Youtube videos of the catamaran "Sailing into Freedom" which hit an uncharted reef in the Kimberleys region in NW Australia. I really feel for the captain "Plukky" & his supportive female partner.

Or better still make sure your boat has a few properly positioned and suitably sized buoyancy compartments.

We are starting to get a list together of unsafe boats.

What exactly is your complaint?
The cat was seriously holed but remained floating, AFAIK it is still floating.
I believe we can have a serious discussion about seamanship and the desirability of solid glass shoes on the keel.
If you want to take any boat into uncharted waters do not do it at night. Time the tides - extremely important in that part of the world at 8-9 meters.
A monohull would likely have sunk in the same situation.

Yep Slug a Crowther holed below the waterline yet still seems to be floating quite well. Better stay behind the computer as there never will be a boat that will meet your expectations.

Well I hope this hazard to Navigation now gets charted.
Sound advice not to go into poorly or uncharted waters after dark or in bad weather.

You are in good company in hitting uncharted rocks, HM Submarine Anchorite hit a uncharted pinnacle of rock in the Hauraki Gulf in New Zealand in the early 60s. It was uncharted, but not unknown because local trawlermen knew about it having fouled their nets on it, but they never reported it.
Well it is now charted, and named "Anchorite Rock"

So many cruisers now have drone with high quality cameras and are posting on Youtube.
How about CF set up a clearing house for cruiser produced aerial views. There must be lot of stuff that gets taken but not uploaded to Youtube and in any event the Youtube material is not searchable by lat/long.

Your comments are spot on. A monohull would definitely have gone to the bottom in this situation. This cat did remarkably well to stay afloat stern down providing a stable platform for the crew to remain on & survive in known crocodile infested waters.

Seaslug has a reputation on here for constantly slagging off multihulls that have come to grief through becoming holed by running aground or some other misadventure. I believe his username is a reflection of this bias. Seaslug (possibly a Seawind slag???) Caravan = anti catamarans in general.

But he refuses to say.

This is not a cat vs mono comment as I love both.... but a full keeled, steel built hull like mine, would probably have come off of that reef mostly unscathed.
