Re: Catamaran flips in Rough Seas - Fraser Island
Calling me dumb or stupid is not very persuasive. If there's one thing I have learned, it is people will believe what they want to believe, and facts and common sense be damned. You're entitled to your opinion; I don't dispute that. Please permit me mine.
Good night.

Paul, you are indeed entitled to your opinions, and on any subject. However, espousing the opinions you present in this thread undermines our ability to respect them, on this subject or any other.
I'd sure feel better about what you said if you, or any of us, knew ANY of the facts involved in this event. As it is, you are condemning folks and the vessel without really knowing anything beyond the rescue of two men clinging to the hulls of an overturned catamaran. Pretty hard to judge the seaworthyness of the vessel or the competence of the sailors from that.
Your passionate statements may feel good to you, but not to most of us.
Jim

Hi Mirage Gecko,
You're right, we do not know their route, but the time of the try, other than after dark, was okay with the tide. We do not know anything about what they tried to find out in advance, and, indeed, not much other than that they were respected racers. If they trusted the light on Fraser Is. it is understandable what happened to them. The light was set up over 20 yrs. ago, and does not accurately indicate the course any more.
Way sad.
Ann

Dreadfull when this sort of thing happens. I hope we find out what went wrong so we can learn from their disaster.

IIRC, they flipped that boat at Airlie Beach last year as well.
Edit: Just checked and it was another green cat: Cool Change.

Re: Catamaran flips in Rough Seas - Fraser Island
Excellent summary from 2wind. I have also crossed the Wide Bay Bar many times as skipper (twice this year in a Caribbean 26 power boat) and agree 100% with the comments. A three meter swell would be at the absolute peak of my daytime crossing (without much wind) and way above anything I would try at night.
Note that if you what to have a look at the swell for Maloolooba this is the link: https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/c...es/mooloolaba/

I must have missed some of the info here, I didn't see what type of boat it was. Could you elaborate, or are you speculating?

A larger version of a hobby cat that I used to race and flip all the time on Sydney Harbour when I was way much younger. Can't be compared at all to the usual home away from home heavy cats that sit much deeper in the water and have much better heavy weight stability then these racing cat things.
