Catamaran Discounts

Thanks for your help.

If we traveled to South Africa, would used cats be priced lower?

I mean, unlike locations where people "stop sailing" or rental companies proliferate, and sailing centers (Ft. Lauderdale) offer up cats for sale, does SA have a robust, used, cruising cat market?

What about the Philippines or Indonesia?

We're hoping, hopping on a plane could give us lower prices and maybe better equipped boats.

Thanks.

Re: Catamaran Discounts

South Africa has very few used cats ! Almost all of the cats built here are sold to foreign buyers and leave the country.

When I wanted to buy mine I followed the same thought process and found Seychelles to be my answer and I bought my cat there.

Re: Catamaran Discounts

The USA and Caribbean have robust catamaran markets for used vessels. However,
several very destructive hurricanes have severely damaged may of the vessels you would normally see on the used market (38' to 45'). Due to this, a used catamaran in OK condition costs around $200k USD in the current market. There are some vessels available for less than $150k USD but they are in rough condition. As catamarans become more popular and demand increases due to the YouTube sailor phenomena; the prices on the used market will continue to rise. The upside is that CATs hold their value for a long time.

Thanks. Your research matches ours. Still, we're desperately searching for some type of loophole. Thinking some legwork could help.

I guess more people bail closer to "home" because the commitment, planning and determination sailing to "far away" places keeps people going.

Thanks.

South Pacific/NZ/Oz look like the end of a one-way trip for many

Would you consider an Amel mono hull? They are well proven world cruiser "go anywhere" boats and there are several for sail in Europe and Caribbean for under $100K

I have a friend that bought his cat in Italy in January this year. Going now into winter their prices are at their lowest. He sailed the year in the med and will now cross to the Caribbean

Second the idea of the western Pacific. NZ, Australia, New Caledonia. Also SE Asia, similar circumstances. In NZ try the Whangarei area, seems a lot of cats end up on the hard there (Norsand and Port Whangarei Marine Center in particular) and up for sale. You could probably wander those two yards and find 15 or 20 cats for sale of all makes/models/sizes/ages (Multihull Solutions if you want to deal with a brokerage to get an idea - they have a large presence in the area). The western side of the Pacific is the end of the road for many East Coast US and European cruisers.

Re: Catamaran Discounts

Do you guys think there are many for sale that aren't listed online somewhere? I would assume- maybe wrongly- that all brokers would have them on sites like Yachtworld or even localized options. I also can't imagine anyone privately selling an expensive cat that would rely only on word of mouth, local ads or someone just walking a dock.

They say Panama is where boats go to die. Might be worth a look.

Re: Catamaran Discounts

With The Aussie Dollar being at a very low rate, you would do well to look at Australia as your US $ will go a long way here
