Oh.. I was under the impression that you were a live aboard cruiser, in which case you have everything you own aboard. You obviously don't and are able to keep that needed weight discipline on a cat.

I know you will never believe me, not even when you would scuba dive on them. You would surely find reasons for their sinking that don't count as such in your view. I tried to find the events on the Internet but didn't succeed. The Prout was the last one I saw go down and this was in Curacao in 2005 or 2006. It sunk while being pulled off a beach, regardless of all the floats attached. There are hundreds of boats who can confirm but alas, not members here a.f.a.i.k.

The Voyage sank during hurricane Ivan in Grenada. Many cats sunk during that event. I normally don't post these depressing photo's but will make this one exception; this cat is stuck with it's rig in the mud. I don't remember what type of cat it was but think it was a Moorings charter boat.

cheers,
Nick.

Why is the dinghy upside down?

That cat isn't really sunk. Only partially sunk. So that doesn't count. In fact it hasn't really flipped either. So the boat survived the hurricane without sinking or flipping. It's only partially flipped and partially sunk. Also completely off topic dogs do better on cats and cats are better on monos then dogs on a mono. Which is relevant because it's something I feel strongly about and I believe to be fact.

That; and I don't see the appeal of crossing an ocean in a crowded smoky casino, with a dozen crew pestering me for tips,...everytime I try to leave my small cramped cabin to go look around or get something to eat or drink, (yes the meals are "FREE", but the recommended tip is more than what the whole meal would cost in a 5 star resteraunt). Drinks are NOT free and my tab approached the national debt by the end of the voyage, not because I drank that much, but because the drinks were THAT expensive.

Why wouldn't your core keep you afloat? How many tonnes of lead are you carrying? I'm sure if you got rid of the lead your core would keep the boat afloat...

Yes you did. You said it would float without them, which I was corroborating.

Re: Catamaran Capsizes in Galveston Bay

Well I was in Galveston last weekend, I haven't heard the local scoop yet. The Coast guard here does a pretty good job. There was some gusty winds, we just had a cold front blow through, as usual accompanied by unstable weather, strong north winds, rain and short peaked waves. Also a north wind will drain the bay, leaving once deep water subject to sudden shoaling.

On the cat vs mono debate, I once sailed a Hobie cat, and didn't capsize, but when sailing a Laser flipped it twice.

When I sailed Sunfish as a teen I spent more then my fair share of time in the water! On the other my old boat cat wouldn't go in the water let along flip. Food for thought ...

I love the whole my boat won't sink thing.
If the boat is up mostly to the gunwales, which would happen even in an "unsinkable" boat, it is going to be a loss. Engines, cabinetry, contents, etc.
And if a cat is upside down, much is said of the fact that it won't sink. If you've ever tried to sit on an inverted hull in any waves, it is wet, slippery, and darned near impossible to stay on. So if you have activated your EPIRB, and are just waiting, you may need to get in your liferaft regardless.
And if you are in a cat that holes a hull on an object, I bet in any waves it won't stay stably upright as one hull floats and another sinks down. S best of luck trying to camp out on that.
Best of all is avoidance.
I have seen a very similar boat to my Luders (a hinckley pilot 35) laid spreaders in the water in a building assisted 40knot puff in Baltimore Inner Harbor during a race, and finish the race no worse the wear. I wonder what would happen to a cat which can't heel to blow off the pressure. Torn sail? Rig down? Or capsize? That's what I would fear on anything but a heavy slow cruising cat. Microbursts, sudden gusts when you have too much sail up on a mono leads to heeling and release of pressure. On a cat?

Re: Catamaran Capsizes in Galveston Bay

I am not going to get into the tiresome (and endless) debate about mono versus multi, but must take issue with malbert73:

1. The boat would be a total loss even if unsinkable. Perhaps, but not necessarily so. Recently, a Broudblue 385 that was holed and flooded in the South Pacific was salvaged by the owner who is currently repairing it in order to continue his voyage.

2. If a cat is upside down, sitting on an inverted 'hull' would be wet, slippery and near impossible to stay on - you may need to get into your liferaft regardless. On an inverted catamaran, at least, one would not attempt to sit on the inverted hulls, but rather on the inverted bridgedeck. This is a relatively large, flat area that provides some protection for the occupants from the inverted hulls. A number of cats have been equipped with (or like mine, retrofitted with) U-bolts on the underside of the boat to permit lifelines to be run on the fore and aft ends of the bridgeck, if the boat has capsized. They can also be used to lash down the liferaft in an inflated state, in order to provide a covered area of accomodation. This would be a much more safe and stable platform than a liferaft alone; it would also be one that would be much easier to spot from other vessels, or from aloft.

Re: Catamaran Capsizes in Galveston Bay

Wow! I read the title of this thread and checked it out because our hometown is right on Galveston Bay and I wanted to know what had happened in our home area. Probably 99% of this thread has nothing to do with the title. Guess I should have expected that when I saw that this was posted in the multihull section.
