No doubt they will. That boat can easily be repaired. Couple of thousand dollars worth of materials and a couple of hundred hours labour.

Pretty impressive 44. I'm curious why it would be bow down like that. Why wouldn't the aft have flooded equally? Possibly just the bow lockers are watertight and only they were holed? Hopefully that's the case and interior damage will be minimal.

I'd say the 4 lowest (and biggest) sealed buoyancy chambers in the bow are holed, but the stern buoyancy chambers are still intact.

Unfortunately the hulls look to be flooded too. Structurally the damage will be easy and inexpensive to fix, the total cost will mostly depend on how much personal gear, electrics, electronics, etc has been damaged by water.

They could have ditched the outboards to keep them afloat if in any danger of going under.

I think I have a decent sense of humor but we are talking about an elderly couple that hit a reef/rocks. Considering their ages and the wifes condition I think they did well to apply some patches on it before moving on but I fail to see the humor.
I do understand that some Cat guys are looking for any opportunity to make themselves feel better about their choices but I think a better subject matter might have had an opportunity for some humor rather than this situation. If they were in a monohull and hit the rocks and got hung up there as many of you think might happen would that also be something to joke about??
Seriously I'm sure you wouldn't have to look very far to find a better candidate to make jokes about.

How do you do that if holes underwater?

great add for sikaflex. Will have a look.

Sikaflex wouldn't stick but a bead around the edge of a plywood patch would help stem the flow a bit...maybe...at least that's what they were probably hoping. Worth a try anyway.

Nice to see Bob Oram got the buoyancy right, not all designs would be able to limp home with the forward lower compartments flooded. Is that a 39C?

Actually if they were attempting to patch the damage, it more likely the hole was in the main hull as they wouldn't be able to access inside buoyancy compartments. Or holed in both. What's the construction down there 44? Solid glass or cored? I guess cored because of the flat panel construction method?

Very sad story. He is in hospital with internal organ damage, and his wife is dying of cancer and navigates from a wheelchair. Another couple might recover from this, but this elderly couple… not easy.

With regard to what they hit… maybe rocks, but there are plenty of uncharted wrecks in that area as well as all over SE Asia. Heck, a friend of mine hauled up a longtail with their anchor windlass earlier this year… But uncharted rocks? Frankly it is the norm in SE Asia. Charts are poorly if ever updated and original data often sketchy. I have at least six chartplotter images of me anchored high up a hill… Pan Asia/Pacific problem. Caveat navigator. Particularly in shallow waters such as Phang Nga/Krabi. As I said. Very sad.
