Out here it's not the sharks or the cudas, it's the damn sea lions. It is a fine balance between bringin the fish in too fast and losing it, and not bringing it in fast enough only to find all you have left is a fish head. Worst part is, once the sealions find you, they will follow the boat for hours. They have even been known to go on deck after the fish.

Last June there was a fishing tournament here. One of our friends was fishing, and he hooked a huge wahoo. By the time he got it to the boat, he had only the head. He brought it back to dock, anyhow, because of the size. The head weighed 52 lbs.
Wonder what ate it...

anyhow, thinking about towing a dead fish in these warm waters for 20 minutes while it bleeds out...
I think down here they would call that 'catching your own bait'. For sure I would put a hook in it.

As much as I don't like to share fish with the sharks, I'll be damned if I'm sharing any alcohol with tonight's dinner, LOL! Nah, for me a series of whacks to the skull with a beater does the trick just fine.

As Harriet mentioned a little squirt with rubbing or denatured alcohol in the gills kills the fish quickly without any mess, no Neanderthal with a club going ballistic all over your stern!

We dispatch our fish with alcohol on the gills, and then we immediately place them in a plastic box that is six inches high and about three and a half feet long. We filet the fish in the long plastic box, and when we are done, we wash out the plastic box/container with sea water.

The plastic boxes are the type used by some people for underbed storage in their homes.

When we fish, we troll with up to eight lines behind Exit Only at all distances from the stern.
