CAT compaired to MONO expence

I was wondering the cost comparison in regard's to on the Hard, marina, Slips cost, mooring, ECT. I obviously understand it has two motors and the like. My wife feels like life on a boat would be fare more enjoyable on a Cat. Happy Wife happy Life is a saying of late I am investing in. Anyway, love this Forum by the way, Thanks' in advance. George

(34 x 16 catamaran, 3.5 draft)

My experience on the Chesapeake has been that there is no difference, or that it is cheaper, because I can take slips that are too shallow for others.

Once the beam get even a little greater, your going to see some increases and travel lifts become a little more spotty.

Re: CAT compaired to MONO expence

There really isn't a single way to compare this.

First define the comparable boat. Are we comparing interior living space or LOA? A cat will have for more interior room for the same length.

Second, what marina? Some don't charge extra for extra beam, particularly moorings. But a med moor marina will charge based on width not length. So it just depends. And again are we comparing two 40' slips (but one a double wide) or a 40' and a 60' slip?

Bottom jobs and the like are typically quoted by square footage, so a cat of the same length will be about 50% more. Some places charge by the foot so cats are less, others double the length for cats and will charge more.

Hard spots on jack stands are often charged by the square footage you take up... So very boat dependent.

Purchase price... The same as above. Typically a cat are more expensive by either comparison (length or volume) but this isn't often a massive difference.

In other words you need to provide more information. There is no one correct answer, and a lot of it depends on how you define 'similar mono and cat'.

Personally I prefer tri's. But then I am a little nuts.

She'll be Happier but you will be paying for it.

Slip's will cost more and you'll have two engines (I hope).

Harder to find a hull out at times.

Other than that not to much difference.

But it's worth it

Re: CAT compaired to MONO expence

I think it's more important to have the experience of sailing on both catamarans and monohulls; throw in trimarans too!
If you're both perfectly satisfied with a monohull, get one of those.
If you prefer 'flat' sailing, go for the catamaran (or trimaran, although usually somewhere in between regarding heeling).

I haven't found it much more expensive owning a trimaran vs. monohull. It does need a lift that will handle the wide load though.

As Stumble said, some marinas will charge more, some won't.

Re: CAT compaired to MONO expence

My wife also demanded a cat after spending 2 charters on monos and 3 on cats before we bought. Ours is 37 x 15, and we have no marina issues in SW Florida. Being a power cat with efficient hulls, we get away with smaller horsepower needs than others, perhaps, so even though we have twins, neither would break the break if failed (Yanmar 4JH4-HTE, 110hp x 2).

Happy wife does equal happy life, and frankly with the large flat foredeck space, huge flybridge, and large saloon, I'm pretty sold on cats now myself.

Re: CAT compaired to MONO expence

We were 50x27. No problems and yes very comfortable and fun. Cost wise? Frankly never really noticed a major multiple over monohulls (we are back in a mono now).

A bit more planning at times to secure facilities that can haul. That being said we always found a place no matter where in the world we were. In addition we could "dry out" with ease anywhere.
