AFAIK a Tiki 21 is the smallest multihull to have ever circumnavigated, and I would bet that more Wharram designs have done so than any other.

FWIW your requirements sound ideally to suited to an L440...and there are plenty of L440's out there so you might find some selection, even in your price range. A quick look suggests not a lot of negotiating would bring a number of L440's into your price range.


Our experience (admittedly limited to our L440) confirms...

• It is a VERY seaworthy vessel. We put ~20,000nm under our hulls thus far, including some very serious conditions, and always felt safe.
• It is very roomy and would easily accomodate a family.
• It is very well laid out for life 'on the hook' with multiple living areas...saloon, cockpit, flybridge, forward cockpit...which we found great for finding 'space' when on anchor.

Ausaviator. The Wharram designs may not please everybody and their weather performance is not brilliant. They are also some of the most seaworthy multihull designs around. The hulls shapes give nothing away to accomadations or style. They are built as boats to sail places ,not primarily as a dockside cottage. If they don't appeal to you thats OK just spend your money on another design. It is supposed to turn you on.

Wharrams reflect a design philosophy that puts seaworthiness first and foremost, at the expense of accomodation. They are simple, solid and it may be that more Wharrams have safely circumnavigated than any other design. Back in the '70's and '80's you couldn't cast a lead line without hitting a Wharram or Searunner that was circumnavigating with a young family aboard.

Sadly, as Boatsmith pointed out, quality doesn't come cheap. But good deals can be had on used Wharrams.

Wharram = Malaysian pirate vessel / Chinese Junk. I think the newest generation of cruisers these days prefer something that doesn't "look" like it will sink in the first storm that hits it.
